A monocular is lighter and easier to carry for a walk-in, and leaves your other eye dark-adapted. Binoculars are more comfortable over long periods and give better depth perception, which matters when judging distance in the dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eHow night vision actually works\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwo different technologies get sold under one name, and most of the range here is the first of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDigital night vision uses an infrared illuminator, which shows little more than a faint red glow to the eye, and a sensor that sees its light clearly. It behaves like a camera in the dark: you get a clear image, usually black and white, out to whatever the illuminator reaches. It needs some target to illuminate, so it sees through darkness but not through fog, foliage or a wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThermal works on emitted heat instead of reflected light. It needs no illumination at all and it does not care about darkness, smoke or light scrub. What it gives you is a heat shape rather than a picture, so you will see that something warm is standing in a paddock at four hundred metres, and you will not be able to read the tag on its ear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eWhich one for which job\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlmost everything on this page is digital, which is what you want for identifying something rather than merely locating it. To identify, use digital. To find, use thermal, and there is a thermal monocular here for that job. Spotting an animal in bush at distance is a thermal job. Confirming what it is, reading a number plate, or watching a track at close range is a digital job. People who do both usually carry a thermal to scan and a digital to confirm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eMagnification, and why more is not better\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery step of magnification narrows the field of view and multiplies any shake in your hands. High optical zoom is useful on a tripod, at a known distance, watching one spot. Scanning open country is easier at low magnification, because a wide field finds movement and a narrow one walks past it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDigital zoom is not magnification at all. It enlarges the pixels you already have, so an image at 4x digital contains no more detail than the same image cropped afterwards.
