Description

The MAS-USBVOICE02 is a mini USB voice recorder built into a thumb-drive shaped body, so it goes on a keyring or into a laptop bag and plugs straight into a computer with no cable and no separate charger to carry. It weighs 19 g, records for up to 7 hours continuously, and supports voice-activated capture so it pauses while the room is quiet.

The sensitive microphone picks up speech at up to 10 m, recordings are saved as WAV files, and transfer is plug and play over USB with no software to install. A built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery tops up from the same port. It suits meetings, interviews, lectures and dictation, wherever you want an accurate record of what was said.

Features

Plug-in USB body: The thumb-drive shape goes on a keyring or into a laptop bag and plugs straight into a computer, so there is no cable and no separate charger to carry.
Voice-activated capture: Records only when sound is detected, which saves battery and storage and keeps the silent gaps out of the file.
Up to 7 hours continuous: Handles a long meeting or a full lecture without needing a recharge partway through.
Clear digital audio: The sensitive microphone captures speech up to 10 m away for intelligible playback across a normal room.
Plug-and-play workflow: Recordings save as WAV and copy over USB with no extra software to install.
Rechargeable battery: The built-in Li-ion cell recharges from the same USB port you use to move files.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Meetings and project catch-ups

Record a meeting you are part of and write the actions up afterwards from the audio instead of trying to take notes and follow the discussion at the same time. Up to 7 hours of continuous recording covers a long session, and voice activation keeps the file to the parts where people were talking.

Lectures and study

Students can capture a lecture they are attending and go back over the difficult sections later. The recorder plugs straight into a laptop at the end of the class, so the WAV file is on the machine without a cable or an app.

Interviews and dictation

Keep a full record of an interview you are conducting, or talk your notes through on the way back from a site visit and type them up later. At 19 g it is light enough to carry on a keyring all day.

How it Works

Plug the recorder into a computer or a USB charger to charge the built-in Li-ion battery. The same port handles charging and file transfer, so there is nothing else to carry.
Start recording with the on-device control, or switch on voice activation so it captures only when someone is speaking. Continuous recording runs for up to 7 hours on a charge, and the microphone picks up speech at up to 10 m.
Plug it back into a computer and the recorder mounts as ordinary USB storage. Copy the WAV files across and play them with any standard media player, with no software to install.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start recording?

Use the on-device control to begin continuous recording, or enable voice activation so it records only when sound is present.

Do I need special software to play files?

No. Connect the recorder to a computer over USB and the WAV files are there to copy and play with any standard media player.

How long can it record on one charge?

Up to 7 hours of continuous recording. Voice-activated use extends the total capture time by skipping the silence.

How far away can voices be captured clearly?

The built-in microphone picks up speech from up to 10 m in typical indoor conditions. Background noise and hard surfaces will shorten that in practice.

What powers the device?

A built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery, recharged from the same USB port you use to transfer files, so there is no separate charger.

Is it legal to record audio in New Zealand?

Recording a conversation you are taking part in is generally lawful in New Zealand, which covers most of what people buy a recorder like this for: your own meetings, interviews, phone calls you are on, dictation, and keeping a record when you are dealing with someone difficult. Where it changes is when you are not part of the conversation. Recording or listening to a private communication between other people is interception under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961, and it is an offence whether or not you ever share the recording. The Privacy Act 2020 also applies once you are collecting information about identifiable people, so keep recordings only as long as you need them and tell people where you reasonably can. This is general information, not legal advice.
