Card or 4G?
A card-based camera is cheaper and has no running cost, but you have to walk in to see what it caught. A 4G model sends photos the moment they are taken, which pays for itself on a block that takes an hour to reach, or when you are watching a gate rather than a game trail. Solar models add a panel so you are not replacing batteries through winter either.
Trigger speed and detection range matter more than resolution for game. A slow trigger photographs the space an animal has already left. For property monitoring the priority reverses: you want enough resolution to identify a person or a vehicle.
Rural theft
Quad bikes, diesel, tools and stock go missing from lifestyle blocks and farms, usually from a shed or a gateway well away from the house. A camera on the approach tells you who came in and when, which is the part police can actually use. Position for the track in rather than the shed itself, since a plate or a face at the gate is worth more than footage of someone already inside.
Pest and predator monitoring
Trail cameras do a second job here that they do not do in most markets. Possums, rats and stoats are monitored and trapped on lifestyle blocks, farms and reserves across the country, and a camera on a trap line tells you what is visiting, when, and whether your trap placement is right, without walking the line every week. Look for a fast trigger and good infrared range for nocturnal animals, and a camera that takes bursts rather than single frames.
Built for New Zealand conditions
Bush is wet, coastal blocks carry salt in the air, and New Zealand sits under some of the strongest UV in the world, which degrades cheap plastic housings and seals within a season or two. Look for a properly sealed housing rather than a splash rating, and expect a budget camera to weather faster here than the specification suggests. If you are running 4G on a remote block, check coverage at the exact spot before you buy, terrain here creates dead pockets a district-level coverage map will not show. All three networks completed their 3G shutdowns on 31 March 2026, so any older 3G camera no longer connects.
Trigger speed and detection range
Trigger speed is the gap between the sensor noticing movement and the camera taking the frame. Under half a second catches an animal crossing the sensor. Over a second returns a photograph of an empty track and a tail. If the camera is watching a trail rather than a bait station, trigger speed is the specification that decides whether the camera is worth having.
Detection range is how far out the infrared sensor notices body heat, usually quoted around fifteen to twenty metres. The figure is measured in ideal conditions and drops in warm weather, because the sensor works on the difference between an animal and the background. On a hot afternoon a camera quoted at twenty metres may trigger at twelve.
Flash type, and the trade you are making
White flash gives colour images at night and is unmistakable to anything with eyes. Standard infrared gives black and white images and shows a faint red glow at the front of the camera. No-glow infrared shows nothing at all, at the cost of a shorter effective range and slightly darker images.
For wildlife on a private block, standard infrared is the usual compromise. For anywhere the camera itself might be taken, no-glow is worth the range penalty.
Cellular models and coverage
A 4G trail camera sends images to your phone instead of storing them for collection, which is the difference between knowing today and knowing in a fortnight. It needs a SIM with data and it needs coverage where the camera is, which in back country is the part to check first. Signal strength varies enormously over a few hundred metres of bush, and a camera that cannot connect simply stores to its card like any other.
Battery life on cellular models is shorter, because sending images costs far more power than saving them. A solar panel is close to essential on any camera you do not intend to visit often.
