Description

Three ways of finding something, in a unit that weighs 160 g and fits a jacket pocket. The VIM-BUGDETECT13 sweeps 10MHz to 8.6GHz for transmitters, carries a clip-on magnetic probe for magnet-mounted GPS trackers, and has a tri-LED 940nm infrared module for camera lenses up to about 3 m.

A colour needle meter and a single sensitivity dial are the whole interface, with onboard filtering to hold down background noise. Nothing pairs, nothing connects to an app, and nothing leaves the device. The 500mAh cell gives about 5 hours and refills over USB-C in under 4. 117 x 60.5 x 24 mm.

Features

  • Wide RF Sweep: Covers 10MHz to 8.6GHz, which takes in WiFi, Bluetooth, LoRa and the cellular bands, so most of what transmits in a room falls inside the range.
  • Magnetic Probe For Trackers: The clip-on probe alerts when a magnet-mounted tracker is within about 20 cm on metal, which finds hardware that is dormant and giving off no signal at all.
  • 940nm Lens Finder: A tri-LED infrared module picks out concealed pinhole camera lenses to about 3 m, and works in a darkened room where the reflection stands out most.
  • Colour Needle Meter: A green through blue and yellow to red scale gives an immediate read on how strong a source is, with onboard filtering to hold down the background rather than alarming on everything.
  • One Sensitivity Dial: Sweep the room wide, then dial the sensitivity down to close in to within about 30 cm of the source. That single control is most of the technique.
  • Quiet Or Loud: Vibration only for a discreet sweep, buzzer for speed, or both together when you want the strongest feedback. About 5 hours per charge over USB-C.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Hotel Room Or Short Stay Rental

The classic case, and the one where having all three methods in one pocket-sized unit actually gets the check done.

Sweep on RF first for anything streaming, then darken the room and use the infrared lens finder across the smoke detector, the alarm clock, the power adaptors and anything facing the bed. Ten minutes covers a normal room properly.

Your Own Vehicle

A tracker under a car is the one thing a radio-only sweep is worst at finding, because the unit is asleep for most of the day.

Run the RF pass with the ignition off and your phone away from the car, then clip on the magnetic probe and work the wheel arches, the sills, the bumper cavities and the boot floor. The probe responds within about 20 cm of a magnet on metal.

A Meeting Room Before A Private Conversation

Ten minutes before people arrive is the cheapest counter-surveillance there is.

Set the sensitivity so the needle sits below the room's own background, then sweep the table, the power outlets, the AV equipment and the chairs. Use vibration-only alerts if you would rather the check went unremarked.

How it Works

  1. Sweep on RF with the sensitivity high and watch the needle rather than waiting for an alert. Switch off your own phone and WiFi first, or the meter will simply track your own devices around the room.
  2. Turn the sensitivity down as the needle rises and cover the same ground again. Each reduction shortens the range the detector responds over, which brings you in toward about 30 cm of the source.
  3. Finish with the other two methods. Use the infrared lens module in a darkened room for camera optics up to about 3 m, and clip on the magnetic probe for metal surfaces and vehicle panels where a dormant tracker would be mounted.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the battery last and how does it charge?

About 5 hours of use from the 500mAh cell, refilled over USB-C in under 4 hours. That covers a vehicle and several rooms in one session, though it is worth charging before a trip rather than finding out mid-sweep.

Will it find camera lenses in a dark room?

Yes, and darkness is the better condition for it. The tri-LED 940nm module supplies its own light, and a lens reflection stands out far more clearly against a dark background. Effective range is up to about 3 m, so this is close, slow work rather than a scan from the doorway.

Will it find a GPS tracker on a vehicle?

The magnetic probe alerts when it detects a strong magnet within about 20 cm on a metal surface, which is how magnet-mounted trackers attach. That works whether or not the tracker is transmitting, which matters because most of them are dormant most of the time.

Does it need an app or an internet connection?

No. Everything happens on the device, through the needle meter and the sensitivity dial. There is nothing to pair, nothing to install and nothing sent anywhere.

What is the basic sweep order?

RF first to find anything transmitting, then the infrared lens check for camera optics, then the magnetic probe across metal, wheel arches, seat rails and panels. Doing all three matters, because each one covers a category the other two cannot see.

Am I allowed to sweep a room for cameras?

Yes. Checking a space you occupy, a hotel room, a rental, a changing room you are using, your own home or vehicle, is your business and needs nobody's permission. If you do find a camera in a private space, do not pull it out. Photograph it exactly where it sits, leave the room, and call the Police. Making an intimate visual recording is a criminal offence in New Zealand under the Crimes Act 1961, and removing the device destroys the evidence of who installed it.
