FAQ
1. Will this find cameras that are turned off or recording to SD card?
Yes. The IR lens finder detects the camera lens itself, not the signal. Turn off the lights, activate CAM mode, and slowly scan the room while looking through the red viewfinder. Any camera lens — on, off, wired, wireless, recording to SD — reflects the infrared light back as a bright pinpoint. Works up to 10 metres away.
2. Will this find a GPS tracker that's sleeping between pings?
Yes. Most GPS trackers sleep 90% of the time to save battery, they wake up, send location, then go dormant. RF detection misses them during sleep. The magnetic probe detects the neodymium magnet they use to stick to metal. Run the flexible gooseneck along wheel wells, under bumpers, behind the dashboard. If there's a magnet, the probe alerts, doesn't matter if the tracker is transmitting or not.
3. Won't it just detect my own WiFi router and phone?
It will. That's normal. The point is to find signals you don't recognise. Turn off your own devices first, or move away from them. In RF mode, walk the room slowly, a hidden bug will show as a signal source that shouldn't be there. The 20-level LED meter helps you triangulate: stronger signal = closer to source.
4. How long does it take to sweep a hotel room?
A thorough sweep takes 10-15 minutes. Start with RF mode to catch anything transmitting. Then switch to lens finder, lights off, scan walls, ceilings, smoke detectors, clocks, anything facing the bed or bathroom. Check the usual hiding spots: alarm clocks, phone chargers, air purifiers, picture frames, showerheads. The magnetic probe is mainly for vehicles, but worth running along any metal fixtures if you're suspicious.
5. Does the lens finder work in complete darkness?
Yes. Darkness is better. The IR LEDs provide the light, you don't need room lights on. In fact, a dark room makes hidden lenses easier to spot because the reflection stands out more against a dark background.
6. Is this legal to use in New Zealand?
Yes. Detection is legal anywhere you have a reasonable expectation of privacy, hotel rooms, Airbnbs, your vehicle, your home. This device only detects signals; it doesn't jam, block, or interfere with anything. You're not breaking any law by checking for hidden cameras in a rental.
