How to choose a memory card for a camera
Why a camera needs a card of its own
A dash cam, security camera or trail camera records in a loop. When the card is full it overwrites the oldest footage and carries on, day after day, which is far more writing than a phone or a photo camera ever does. Give the camera a new card of its own rather than the one out of an old phone, format it inside the camera before the first recording, and format it again every couple of months, because the file table is what corrupts under constant rewriting.
Match the capacity to the loop
Capacity decides how much footage the camera keeps before the loop replaces the oldest file. At a typical 4 Mbps 1080p security camera bitrate, 32GB holds about 16 hours, 64GB about 33 hours, 128GB about 65 hours and 256GB about 130 hours. At a 20 Mbps 4K bitrate those figures fall to about 3, 6.5, 13 and 26 hours. A camera that records only when motion triggers it stretches the same card over days or weeks. Check the largest size your camera supports before buying the biggest card on the page: some older cameras and dash cams stop at 32GB or 64GB.

Which brand will I receive?
It depends on the stock we hold when your order is packed. We do not guarantee a particular brand, so the card may differ from the one pictured. If you need a specific brand or speed rating, contact us before you order and we will tell you what we have.
What size do I need?
Start with the largest card your camera supports, which is in its listing or manual. Then work from the loop: the hours in the table assume 4 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K, and the real figure depends on your camera's resolution and compression settings. Halve the bitrate and you roughly double the time; record only on motion and the same card lasts days or weeks.
Do I need to format it first?
Yes. Format the card inside the device that will use it before the first recording. It takes a few seconds and avoids most recording errors.
How often should I replace it?
Under constant loop recording, every year or two, or sooner if the camera keeps reporting card errors after a fresh format.
Is an SD adapter included?
No. The card comes on its own. To read it on a computer without a microSD slot, use a card reader or an SD adapter.
Which cameras need one?
Dash cams, trail cameras, 4G and WiFi security cameras, body cameras and many hidden cameras record to a microSD card. Check each listing: some cameras already include a card, and the listing says so when they do.
