Two decisions cover almost everything: how many lenses you need, and whether the camera keeps recording when the engine is off. Front and rear coverage answers the crash. Parking mode answers everything that happens while you are not in the car, which for most owners turns out to be the more valuable half. Resolution barely matters once you are past 1080p, because a dash camera answers what happened and who was where, not what somebody's face looked like at forty metres.

Four things every camera in this range has, so you do not need to compare them: a super capacitor instead of a lithium battery, a G-sensor that locks footage on impact, microSD recording, and a parking mode of some kind. What differs is lens count, how the footage reaches you, and how the parking mode is triggered.
Before you mount anything, a New Zealand point nobody makes. There is no rule naming dash cameras, so a WoF inspector assesses one under the general windscreen vision rules. Mount it in the middle of the swept area and you risk a fail. Keep it within about 100mm of the top edge or tucked behind the rear-view mirror. Full detail below.

Channels: What Each Lens Is For
Channel count is the first decision and the one that eliminates most of the range. Each lens answers a different question.
Front only
Covers the road ahead. Enough for the classic dispute, which is someone pulling out or stopping suddenly in front of you. It is also the thing that answers least, because a large share of crashes involve being hit from behind.
Dual: front and rear
The default for most private drivers. The rear camera mounts on the back window and covers exactly where rear-end collisions and tailgating happen, which a front camera cannot see at all. If you are buying one camera for a family car, this is the configuration.
Triple: front, cabin and rear
Adds an interior lens with its own infrared for night. Essential for anyone carrying passengers for money, and increasingly useful for anyone carrying passengers at all, because the disputed version of events is often about what was said or done inside the vehicle rather than outside it.
Note that some triple-channel units here use the third lens for a second cabin angle rather than a rear window camera. Read the description: VIM-LUXXRD covers the road plus both sides of the cabin, while VIM-LUXX11R includes an external rear camera.
Four channel
Road ahead, two cabin angles and an external rear camera. This is fleet, rideshare and commercial territory, where every angle needs covering because every angle gets disputed. VIM-LUXXRDR and VIM-LUXXRD2R.
The short version. Private car: front and rear dual. Passengers for money: triple with a genuine cabin lens. Fleet or high-risk: four channel. Motorbike: its own three products, because nothing designed for a windscreen survives being bolted to a bike.
And then: how does the footage reach you?
Three levels, and they cost progressively more.
Local recording only. Everything goes to the microSD card and you take the card out, or connect the camera, to get it. Cheapest, simplest, nothing to set up, and entirely fine if you only need footage after an incident you already know about.
WiFi and Bluetooth to your phone. The camera makes its own connection to a phone in the cabin, so you can review clips, download the one you need and change settings without a computer. Most of this range does this, and it is the feature that matters at the roadside.
4G with live view and GPS tracking. The camera has its own SIM, so you can watch the vehicle in real time from anywhere, get alerts while something is happening rather than afterwards, and see where the vehicle has been. Ten units here do this. It is the difference between a record and a monitor.
Be clear that 4G costs meaningfully more, twice. The cameras start at $254 against $132 for local recording, and each one then needs its own data plan every month for as long as it runs. That is worth it when knowing late is no use: a work vehicle, a car that parks in public, a vehicle somebody else drives. For a family car in a garage it is money spent on a capability that will never be used. Most buyers should start with a good front and rear camera and a hardwire kit, and step up to 4G only when there is a reason.

Best for a private car
VIM-LUXX7S, $189. Dual lens 4K with GPS and WiFi, so you get front and rear coverage, position and speed logged against every clip, and the ability to pull footage onto your phone at the roadside without a computer.
WiFi transfer is the feature people underrate. The moment you need dash camera footage is at the scene, exchanging details with somebody who remembers it differently. Being able to show them the clip on your phone there and then ends most disputes before they start.

Best for rideshare and taxi work
VIM-LUXX9, $222. Triple channel covering front, rear and cabin, with WiFi for pulling footage onto your phone.
If you carry passengers for money you need the cabin lens, and you need it working after a full summer of ten hour days with the car sitting in the sun between fares. This is the lowest price that configuration comes at.
VIM-LUXX3 at $222 is the dual version with a Sony sensor and GPS logging speed and location. VIM-LUXX11 at $233 adds 4K to the triple setup.

Best for street parking
VIM-LUXXRD, $289. Triple channel 4K covering the road and both sides of the cabin, with a 360 degree radar sensor that keeps watching while the vehicle is parked, and hardwired parking mode.
Radar is the difference between a parking mode that works and one that flattens your battery. A motion-triggered camera in a busy street records every passing car, pedestrian and shadow all night. Radar responds to something approaching the vehicle itself, so it wakes for the person leaning on your door and ignores the traffic.
These four are the newest generation in the range. VIM-LUXXRD at $289 and VIM-LUXXRD2 at $300 are triple channel; VIM-LUXXRDR at $311 and VIM-LUXXRD2R at $322 add an external rear window camera.
A CPL filter is available for all four as an accessory, and it is worth adding. A circular polarising filter clips over the front lens and cuts the reflection of your own dashboard off the inside of the windscreen. On a sunny day that reflection is the single biggest thing standing between you and a readable number plate, and it is the reason footage from an otherwise good camera comes back with a ghost of the dash across the middle of it. Best for watching the car from anywhere
VIM-DASHC4GL3, $445. Dual 4G with front and rear video, GPS route logging, and 24/7 security parking mode over the mobile network, installed with a hardwired ACC kit.
4G changes what a dash camera is. Instead of finding out what happened when you get back to the car, you get an alert and a live view while it is happening, from anywhere. For a work vehicle, a car parked at an airport, or a teenager's first car, that is a different product from a camera that just records.
VIM-DASHC4GL4 at $289 is the most capable camera in the range and has its own pick above. For the highest front resolution, VIM-DASHC4G4K and VIM-DASHC4G4K2 at $500 record 4K at the front.

The most advanced camera in the range
VIM-DASHC4GL4, $289. This is the one to understand before you compare anything else, because it does things nothing else here does.
2K on both lenses, front and cabin, from 3MP sensors rather than a high front and a downgraded rear. Two radar sensors, one per lens. A PIR sensor that reads body heat inside the cabin, so it responds to a person rather than to a shadow. 940nm no-glow infrared on three LEDs. Two-way audio through a built-in mic and speaker. Live GPS with location, speed and route history in the app. A USB-C to OBD2 cable in the box, so hardwiring to the fuse box is optional rather than required. Super capacitor, microSD to 256GB, and a Privacy Mode that disables both recording and remote viewing when you want it off.
AOV means Always On Video, and it is the headline feature. Most parking modes sleep and wake on a trigger, so you get the moment of impact and nothing leading up to it. This one films continuously on both channels while parked. Nothing is missed because nothing had to wake up first. Combined with always-on 4G viewing, you can open the app at any time and see the vehicle live rather than waiting for an alert.

Best for fleet and commercial

Best for a motorbike

HARDWIRE, $33. A vehicle hardwiring kit for dash cameras and GPS trackers, giving a clean install with power whenever the vehicle runs and, on the right camera, power when it does not.
Nearly every parking mode in this guide requires the camera to be hardwired, because a cigarette lighter socket in most vehicles goes dead with the ignition. If you are buying a camera for its parking mode and you plug it into the 12V socket, you have bought a feature that will never once activate. Thirty-two dollars, and it is the difference between the camera working overnight and not.

Parking Mode, Hardwiring and Heat
Parking mode is what most people are actually buying, and it is also the feature most often bought and never used. Here is why.
The cigarette socket usually goes dead
In most vehicles the 12V accessory socket loses power when the ignition is off. That is deliberate, so a phone charger left plugged in cannot flatten the battery. It also means a dash camera plugged into that socket switches off the moment you lock the car, and the parking mode you paid for never once activates.
This is the single most common disappointment in the category. If parking mode is why you are buying, the camera has to be hardwired.
What hardwiring actually does
A hardwire kit like HARDWIRE at $33 takes power from two points in the fuse box: a switched fuse that is live only with the ignition, and a constant fuse that is always live. The camera uses the switched line to know whether the engine is running, and the constant line to keep itself powered when it is not. Most kits include low-voltage cutoff, so the camera shuts down before it can flatten the battery enough to stop the car starting.
VIM-DUALK1S takes a different route and plugs into the OBD2 diagnostic port instead, which gives constant power without touching the fuse box. If you would rather not have anything wired in, that is the simpler install.
The 4G units generally ship with an ACC hardwire kit, since live monitoring is pointless if the camera dies with the ignition.
Radar versus motion versus G-sensor triggering
Three different ways a parked camera decides to record, and the difference decides whether the system is usable.
G-sensor reacts to impact. Every camera here has one. It is reliable and it only fires after something has already hit the car, so you get the aftermath rather than the approach.
Motion detection watches the image for change. In a garage it works well. Parked on a street it triggers on every passing car, pedestrian, shadow and headlight, filling the card and draining the battery overnight.
Radar senses something physically approaching the vehicle, so it ignores traffic passing at distance and wakes for the person walking up to your door. It is the reason the radar models exist and why they are the right choice for street parking. Some use a built-in sensor and some an external one, and both do the same job. VIM-DASHC4GL4 carries two, one per lens, alongside a cabin PIR that reads body heat.
And then there is not triggering at all. Always On Video on the VIM-DASHC4GL4 films continuously while parked rather than waiting for anything. Nothing is missed because nothing had to wake up. It costs card space and power, and it is the most complete answer in the range.
Super capacitors, and why they matter here
Every camera in this range uses a super capacitor rather than a lithium battery. That is worth understanding rather than skipping.
A car parked in the sun in a New Zealand summer reaches temperatures well above anything the outside air suggests. Lithium cells degrade fast at those temperatures, swell, and in the worst cases fail dangerously. Capacitors tolerate both extremes far better, charge in seconds, and last for many more cycles. The trade is that a capacitor holds only enough charge to close the current file safely rather than to run the camera, which is exactly why hardwiring matters for parking mode.
For a car that lives outside, a bike, or anything in Northland or Hawke's Bay through February, this is the specification that decides whether the camera is still working in three years.

Mounting, and Your Warrant of Fitness
New Zealand's vehicle inspection rules do not name dash cameras anywhere. That is exactly why this matters: with no specific allowance, an inspector assesses a windscreen-mounted device under the general rules on driver vision, and where you stick it is entirely your risk.
What the rules actually say
Windscreen glazing requirements set out a critical vision area, the part of the screen the driver looks through, which must be clear. Objects attached to the glass are constrained: stickers pass only if they sit wholly within 100mm of the top or bottom edge, or 50mm of the sides, and antennae only if they are within 100mm of any edge.
Dash cameras are not listed, so no equivalent allowance is written down for them. In practice, applying the same principle is the sensible approach.
The safe places to mount
- Within about 100mm of the top edge of the windscreen, in the band the wipers do not clear and the driver does not look through.
- Directly behind the rear-view mirror, where the mirror already blocks that part of your view. This is the most common install and the tidiest, because the mirror hides the camera body and the cable can run up into the headlining.
- Never in the middle of the swept area, and never low down in front of the driver. That is the critical vision area and it is where a fail comes from.
The rear camera has no equivalent restriction in most vehicles, since the rear window is not the driver's primary vision area, but keep it clear of the demister lines and out of the wiper path where one is fitted.
Run the cable properly
Tuck it into the headlining, down the A-pillar and along the trim to the fuse box or socket. A cable hanging across the windscreen is both an obstruction and the thing that makes an installation look like an afterthought. Take care around the A-pillar in any vehicle with a curtain airbag: route the cable so it cannot interfere with the airbag deploying, or have it done professionally.
If you are unsure, ask before the WoF
Inspectors apply judgement here, and it costs nothing to ask your inspection station where they are happy to see a camera mounted before you fix the adhesive pad to the glass. Removing a well-stuck mount from a windscreen is considerably harder than positioning it correctly the first time.
Cordless and wireless dash cams: what those words actually mean
Two of the most searched terms in this category are the two most misunderstood, and they do not mean the same thing.
A wireless dash cam means wireless connectivity, not wireless power. It still takes a cable. What is wireless is how you get the footage off it: WiFi to your phone so you can pull a clip at the roadside instead of removing the card, or 4G so you can view the car remotely. Every model on this page with WiFi or a SIM slot is a wireless dash camera in the sense the term is used.
A cordless dash cam implies it runs on its own battery, and here the honest answer is that a dash camera is not a battery product. The internal cell in most units exists to close the file safely when power is cut, not to run the camera. Anything claiming to record all day on its own battery is either recording very little or has a battery large enough to be a heat risk in a New Zealand summer car.
If the goal is no cable draped across the dash, the answer is a hardwire kit to the fuse box, which is also what enables parking mode. It is a tidier install than a cigarette lighter lead, not a less powered one.
Mistakes That Cause Returns
- Buying for parking mode and plugging into the cigarette socket. The biggest one by a distance. That socket dies with the ignition in most vehicles, so the parking mode never activates. Budget $32 for the hardwire kit at the same time, or buy the OBD2 model.
- Mounting it in the middle of the windscreen. Straight into the critical vision area, and a WoF risk. Top 100mm or behind the mirror.
- Buying front-only when the risk is behind you. A large share of collisions are rear-end. A front camera records the road you were already watching and misses the one that hit you.
- Assuming "4K" means every lens. On almost every multi-lens camera, the headline resolution is the front lens. The cabin and rear lenses record lower, often 1080p, because the processor and the card are shared. VIM-DASHC4G4K states it plainly at 4K front and 1080p rear. Read the per-lens figures.
- Using motion detection for street parking. It triggers on every passing car and pedestrian, fills the card overnight and drains the battery. Radar is what makes street parking practical.
- Ignoring windscreen reflection. Your dashboard reflects off the inside of the glass and sits across the footage in bright conditions, right where a number plate would be. A dark dash mat helps, and a CPL filter, available as an accessory for the four radar models, cancels it properly. This ruins more real-world footage than low resolution does.
- Using an ordinary microSD card. Dash cameras loop-record continuously in heat and vibration, which kills a standard card within months. Use a high endurance card rated for continuous video, sized to the camera's stated limit.
- Never checking the footage until you need it. A full card, a corrupted card or a knocked-out mount all fail silently. Check the recording once a month, and check the date and time are right, because a timestamp is what makes footage useful in a claim.
- Forgetting to tell passengers. If you drive for money and your camera has a cabin lens, passengers need to know. A small sticker at the door handles it.
- Fitting a bike camera meant for a car. Vibration, weather and direct heat kill windscreen cameras on a motorbike. The three bike models exist for that reason.

Key Specs Explained
Resolution, and how it splits across lenses
The range runs 1080p, 2K and 4K, and the number on the box is almost always the front lens on its own. Add a second or third lens and the total is shared: a dual camera advertised at 4K may run 4K front with 1080p rear, or split as 2K and 2K when both record together. Some cameras also drop resolution in parking mode to save space and power.
The practical rule: read the per-lens figures, not the headline. For identifying a number plate you want the highest resolution on the lens facing that direction, and for a cabin lens 1080p is ample because everything is two metres away.
G-sensor
An accelerometer that detects impact and immediately locks the current file so loop recording cannot overwrite it. Every camera here has one. Sensitivity is usually adjustable, and it is worth turning down if you drive on gravel or over speed humps, because an over-sensitive G-sensor locks so many files that the card fills with protected clips and stops recording.
Cabin infrared
The interior lens on a triple or four channel camera has its own infrared LEDs, because a cabin at night is pitch dark and the road lighting outside does nothing for it. VIM-DLUXX4K carries eight. Without it, a cabin lens produces a black rectangle for half the year.
Loop recording and card size
All of these overwrite the oldest footage when the card fills, so recording never stops. That also means unprotected footage has a shelf life measured in days. A larger card buys you more time to notice something happened, and a high endurance card is the only sensible type in a vehicle.
GPS
Logs position and speed against every clip and stamps it into the footage. Extremely useful in a dispute about where you were and how fast you were going.
Understand that it cuts both ways. If your footage shows you were doing 68 in a 50 when somebody pulled out in front of you, that is now recorded too, and it is your recording. That is not a reason to avoid GPS, it is a reason to know what you are handing over before you hand it over.
WiFi and Bluetooth
The camera makes its own connection to your phone in the cabin, no router involved, so you can review and download clips at the roadside. This is the single most useful convenience feature in the category, because the moment you need footage is usually the moment you are standing beside the other driver.
4G, and what it needs
Ten cameras here take their own SIM for live view, alerts and GPS tracking from anywhere with coverage. Each needs a data plan from Spark, One NZ or 2degrees, and there is no subscription from us on top. All three networks completed their 3G shutdowns on 31 March 2026, so there is no fallback below 4G, which is worth knowing if the vehicle spends time in rural areas.
Parking mode variants
"Parking mode" covers several behaviours. Some cameras sleep and wake on a trigger, which is the most power-efficient. Some record continuously at reduced frame rate, described here as 24/7 monitoring, which catches everything but needs the hardwire and a healthy battery. Some do time-lapse. Check which one a product means before assuming it matches what you pictured.
AOV: always on video
Worth separating from ordinary parking mode because it is a different thing. A triggered parking mode sleeps and wakes when the radar, PIR or G-sensor fires, so the recording starts at the event. Always On Video films continuously while parked, so the approach, the wait and the aftermath are all captured with nothing missed while the camera woke up.
Only VIM-DASHC4GL4 does this. The cost is card space, since two channels running continuously fill a 256GB card in about 36 hours before loop recording starts, and power, since the camera never sleeps.
Cabin PIR
A passive infrared sensor reads body heat rather than watching for pixel change. In a parked car that is the difference between waking for a person leaning through the window and waking for a cloud passing over the windscreen. VIM-DASHC4GL4 pairs one with two radar sensors, one per lens.
CPL filter
A circular polarising filter that clips over the front lens. Windscreen glass reflects your dashboard back at the camera, and in bright conditions that reflection sits across the middle of the footage exactly where a number plate would be. A CPL cancels it. One is available as an accessory for the four radar models, VIM-LUXXRD, VIM-LUXXRD2, VIM-LUXXRDR and VIM-LUXXRD2R. It is a small piece of glass and it does more for real-world footage quality than a resolution step.
OBD2 power
An alternative to hardwiring. The OBD2 diagnostic port under the dash carries constant power, so a cable from there gives a camera what it needs for parking mode without touching the fuse box. VIM-DUALK1S is built around it, and VIM-DASHC4GL4 includes a USB-C to OBD2 cable in the box so hardwiring is optional. If you would rather not have anything wired in, or you are in a lease vehicle, this is the route.
Privacy Mode
On VIM-DASHC4GL4. Disables both recording and remote viewing on demand. Useful if the vehicle is sometimes personal and sometimes work, or if a passenger asks, and worth having on any camera someone else can view remotely.
Super capacitor
Universal across this range, and covered in full above. It is the reason these cameras survive New Zealand summers, and the reason parking mode needs external power.

Choose by Use
A family car, parked in a garage
Front and rear is the configuration, and parking mode matters less because the car is secure overnight. VIM-LUXX7S at $189 with GPS and WiFi, or VIM-DLUXX4K at $133 if you would rather cover the cabin than the rear.
A car parked on the street
This is where parking mode earns its money and where radar beats motion detection. VIM-LUXXRD at $289 for triple channel with 360 radar, and add the CPL filter, or VIM-LUXXRD2R at $322 for four channels. Add HARDWIRE at $33 unless the camera already includes a kit.
If you want nothing missed at all rather than nothing missed after the trigger, VIM-DASHC4GL4 at $289 records continuously on both channels while parked and lets you look at the vehicle live from your phone at any time.
Rideshare, taxi and small passenger service
You need the cabin lens, and you need to tell passengers. VIM-LUXX9 at $222 is the entry point, VIM-LUXX11 at $233 adds 4K, and VIM-LUXX3 at $222 is the dual option with a Sony sensor if your cabin is already covered another way.
A work vehicle or a small fleet
You want to know where vehicles are and what happened without asking the driver. VIM-DASHC4GL3 at $445 for live view, GPS route logging and 24/7 parking, or VIM-LUXXRDR at $311 if you need four angles more than you need remote access. Tell your drivers before you fit them, in writing.
A vehicle you leave for long periods
Airport parking, a second car, a boat trailer, a vehicle at a remote property. 4G is the only thing that tells you while it is happening. VIM-DASHC4GL4 at $289 or VIM-DASHC4GL2 at $322. Check the battery can support days of parking mode, or use a lower-power trigger setting.
A new or young driver
Footage settles who was at fault far faster than two accounts do, and GPS logging is a useful conversation with a teenager. VIM-LUXX7 at $177, or a 4G unit if you want to see where the car has been.
Motorbike
VIM-DUALMX3 at $345 with GPS, VIM-MOTBIK2 at $289 without, or VIM-DUALMX at $222 as the entry option. All three are built for vibration and weather in a way a car camera is not.
Highest resolution, whatever it costs
VIM-DASHC4G4K or VIM-DASHC4G4K2 at $500 both 4K at the front with 4G on top. The second holds 4K in parking mode rather than dropping resolution when the engine stops.
FAQs
Are dash cameras legal in New Zealand?
Yes. There is no restriction on having one, and footage is routinely used in insurance claims and by police. The two things to get right are where it is mounted, so it does not obstruct your view, and telling passengers if the camera records the cabin.
Will a dash camera fail my WoF?
It can, if it is mounted in the driver's critical vision area. The rules do not name dash cameras, so an inspector applies the general windscreen vision requirements. Mount it within about 100mm of the top edge or directly behind the rear-view mirror and you will be fine.
Why doesn't my parking mode work?
Almost certainly because the camera is plugged into the 12V accessory socket, which goes dead when you turn the ignition off in most vehicles. Parking mode needs a hardwire kit taking constant power from the fuse box, or an OBD2 connection.
What is AOV, or Always On Video?
A parking mode that films continuously instead of sleeping until a sensor triggers it. Nothing is missed while the camera wakes up, which matters because the useful part of an incident is often the thirty seconds before it. VIM-DASHC4GL4 is the model that does it.
What does a CPL filter do?
It cancels the reflection of your dashboard off the inside of the windscreen, which in bright light sits across the footage exactly where a number plate would be. Available as an accessory for the four radar models. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade to real-world footage quality.
Will parking mode flatten my battery?
Hardwire kits include low-voltage cutoff, which shuts the camera down before the battery drops too far to start the car. Set it conservatively if the vehicle sits for days at a time, and choose a radar or impact trigger rather than continuous recording for long parking periods.
Do I have to tell passengers I am recording?
If you carry passengers for money and the camera records the cabin, yes in substance. The Privacy Act 2020 requires people to be aware their information is being collected, and a small notice at the door does the job. Audio is a separate question, covered below.
Can I record audio in the car?
If you are in the vehicle and part of the conversation, recording it is lawful under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961. Leaving a camera recording audio in an empty car captures conversations you are not part of, which is a different position. If you do not need cabin audio, switch it off.
Do the 4G cameras need a subscription?
No subscription from us. Each 4G camera takes its own SIM with a data plan from Spark, One NZ or 2degrees, and that plan is the only ongoing cost.
What memory card should I use?
A high endurance microSD card rated for continuous video, sized to the camera's stated maximum. Dash cameras loop-record all day in heat and vibration, and ordinary cards fail within months under that.
Can I install it myself?
Socket-powered installs are straightforward. Hardwiring to the fuse box is manageable if you are comfortable identifying switched and constant fuses, and worth paying an auto electrician for if you are not, particularly in vehicles with curtain airbags in the A-pillar where cable routing matters.
Is footage from my dash camera accepted by insurers?
Insurers routinely accept it and it often settles fault quickly. Keep the original file unedited, note the date and time, and do not crop or re-encode the copy you send.
Responsible Use in New Zealand
A dash camera pointed at the road is about as uncontroversial as recording gets. A camera pointed at the cabin is not. The same law applies nationwide with no regional variation.
Filming the road. Recording public roads and other vehicles from your own car is lawful. Number plates, other drivers and pedestrians all appear in footage and that is not a problem in itself.
Mounting and your vision. A device that obstructs the driver's view can fail a warrant of fitness and, more importantly, is a genuine safety issue. Keep it out of the critical vision area.
Cabin audio. Under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961, recording a private conversation you are taking part in is lawful. Recording one you are not part of carries up to two years. A camera left running with audio in a parked or unattended vehicle falls on the wrong side of that. If you do not need cabin audio, turn it off, and if you do, be present.
Passengers, and driving for money. If you carry passengers commercially, you are collecting personal information and the Privacy Act 2020 applies: a lawful purpose, collection that is not unreasonably intrusive, people being aware it is happening, secure storage, and a retention limit. A visible notice at the door is the practical way to handle awareness. Decide how long you keep footage and stick to it.
Employees. Fitting cameras to work vehicles, particularly with cabin lenses or GPS tracking, changes conditions of work. Consult drivers first, explain the purpose honestly, and put a policy in writing covering when it records, who can view it and how long it is kept. Section 4 of the Employment Relations Act 2000 imposes a duty of good faith, and a rollout done to drivers rather than with them tends to end badly regardless of the safety reasoning.
GPS and your own speed. Footage with GPS records your speed as well as everyone else's. That is your recording and you decide whether to hand it over, but know what is in it before you do.
Tracking a person. The Crimes Legislation (Stalking and Harassment) Amendment came into force on 26 May 2026, and tracking a person's movements is a specified act carrying up to five years for a pattern of conduct. A 4G dash camera with GPS fitted to somebody else's vehicle to monitor where they go is that conduct, whatever it was sold as.
Publishing footage. Do not post clips of identifiable people or plates online. Even lawfully captured footage can engage the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015 once published, and posting a crash clip can prejudice your own claim. Send it to your insurer or the police.
Using footage later. Keep the original unedited, note the date and time, check the camera's clock is correct, and lock the file so loop recording cannot overwrite it. Improperly obtained material can be excluded under section 30 of the Evidence Act 2006.
