Trail Camera Buying Guide NZ: Solar, 4G, GPS and What Lasts a Winter

A trail camera is the only camera you buy expecting to walk away from it for months. Everything about choosing one follows from that: how it gets power, how the footage reaches you, and whether it is still there when you come back. Resolution is the specification everyone compares and the one that decides least.

This guide covers all thirty-one items in the Trail Cameras range, $77 to $767: standalone cameras that store to a card, solar units that run for eighteen months, 4G cameras that stream live to your phone with GPS tracking, dual lens and PTZ models with optical zoom, metal-box anti-theft housings, a four-camera system on a single SIM, and the solar panels and signal booster that make the rest of them work.

The two decisions that matter in New Zealand. Solar output collapses in a southern winter, so an 18-month figure quoted in summer is not an 18-month figure in June. And 4G coverage at the actual spot the camera sits is rarely what the coverage map suggests, which is why we stock a signal booster. Both are covered below.

Power and Reach: the Two Real Decisions

Two questions decide which of these thirty-one you buy, and neither is about picture quality.

How does it stay powered?

AA batteries. Simple, cheap, and you carry spares in a pocket. VI-WILDLIFEL6 runs 5 months on 8 AAs and VIM-PIR108K-4K quotes up to 12 months on a set. The catch is that you have to physically return, and a flat camera is a camera that recorded nothing while you assumed it was working.

Built-in solar. The panel is part of the housing. VIM-PIR200 and VIM-WCW-4K both quote 18 months. Neat, nothing to mount separately, and entirely dependent on where the sun actually falls on that spot.

External solar panel. A separate panel on a lead, so the camera sits in shade under cover while the panel sits in the open where the sun is. That flexibility is why MAS-SOLARTRAIL at $77 and TRAIL-SOLAR2 at $134 exist, and in bush they are usually the better answer than a built-in panel.

How does the footage reach you?

Card only. The camera stores everything and you collect it. Cheapest, most reliable, no ongoing cost, nothing to configure. You find out what happened when you get there, which for wildlife and hunting is usually fine and for theft is usually too late.

WiFi. Only useful if the camera is within reach of a network you control, which on a farm boundary or a bush track it rarely is.

4G. The camera has its own SIM and sends photos, video or a live stream to your phone from anywhere with mobile coverage. Nineteen of the thirty-one do this. It is the difference between finding out in real time and finding out next month, and it costs you a data plan per camera.

The short version. Card-only if you will be back regularly and the camera is for wildlife. 4G if the reason you are buying is that you cannot get there, or that knowing late is no use. Solar if returning to swap batteries is the problem you are solving, and read the winter section before you rely on the quoted figure.

Start here: the $177 no-glow camera

Black flash is the feature worth having at this price. A camera with a visible red glow tells every animal and every person exactly where it is, and once a deer has been lit up by one it does not walk that trail again. Best set-and-forget

VIM-PIR108K-4K, $189. 4K video and 32MP stills triggered by a PIR heat sensor, 940nm infrared to 20 metres, IP66 weatherproofing, and up to 12 months on a single set of batteries.

Twelve months is the longest battery-only figure in the range and it changes how you use a camera. One visit a year to swap batteries and pull the card, instead of a trip every few weeks. For a back paddock, a bush block or a boundary you check seasonally, that is the whole argument.

Best solar without a SIM

VIM-WCW-4K, $233. A 46MP sensor recording 4K, 940nm no-glow infrared to 20 metres, an integrated solar panel with a 4400mAh battery quoted at up to 18 months of standby, and a backup AA battery slot for when the sun does not cooperate.

That backup slot is the detail that matters in this country. A solar camera with no fallback in a Southland winter is a camera that stops. This one takes AAs as well, so a fortnight of solid overcast does not end the deployment.

Best 4G starting point

VIM-4GWILD7, $344. Streams 2K live video to a phone app over the mobile network with no WiFi involved, and runs about 3 months on battery.

This is the cheapest way to actually watch a remote spot in real time. If the reason you are buying a camera is that something is happening while you are not there, and knowing about it a month later is no use, this is where the range starts being useful.

Best for finding a camera you cannot find

VIM-4GWILD9, $357. Solar powered, streams 2K live to your phone, and carries GPS tracking.

GPS on a trail camera does two jobs. It tells you exactly where a camera is when you have half a dozen out across a block and cannot remember which gully the third one is in. And if somebody takes it, the camera reports its own position. On a $357 device left unattended on a boundary for months, that is worth more than a resolution step.

Best for covering a wide area from one point

VIM-4GTRAIL, $422. Camouflage housing, solar powered, 4G with no wiring at all, 2K dual lens with 20X optical zoom.

Dual lens plus optical zoom is a different proposition from a fixed trail camera. One lens holds the wide view while the other zooms in on whatever moved, so a single camera covers a gateway, a yard or a stretch of boundary and still gets you a number plate or a face. Twenty times optical, not digital, so the detail survives.

Best where cameras get stolen

VIM-4GWILD3SM, $556. Solar, 4G live streaming, 30MP, and a rugged metal security box around the whole camera.

Rural theft is why this exists. A trail camera on a farm gate is worth taking and easy to take, and the metal housing turns a thirty second job into one needing tools and time. Combined with 4G, the camera has usually sent the photos before anyone gets the box open.

Read that last part carefully, because it is the reason this exists. Nineteen of the cameras on this page need their own SIM and their own data plan. Solar in a New Zealand Winter

Every solar figure in the table above, 18 months, 90 days, indefinitely, is a manufacturer's number. Here is what actually happens to it in this country.

The daylight problem

New Zealand runs from about 34 degrees south to 47. At midsummer the far south gets around fifteen or sixteen hours of daylight. At midwinter it gets closer to eight, and Auckland is not far behind. A panel producing for eight hours instead of sixteen is producing at half rate before you account for anything else.

The angle problem, which is worse

Panel output depends on sun hitting the panel roughly square on, not on ambient daylight. In winter the sun sits low in the northern sky, so a panel mounted flat, or facing south, or shaded for half the day by the very bush you have placed the camera in, produces far less than the daylight hours suggest.

The practical rule: face the panel north and tilt it up steeply, roughly your latitude plus fifteen degrees for winter. In Otago that is a much steeper angle than looks natural.

The weather problem

A West Coast or Southland winter can deliver a fortnight of solid overcast. Panels still generate under cloud, but at a small fraction of clear-sky output. A camera sized so that solar exactly balances consumption will drain across that fortnight and shut down.

What to do about it

  • Buy the model with an AA backup. VIM-WCW-4K takes AAs alongside its solar cell, which is the single most useful hedge in the range.
  • Use an external panel rather than a built-in one. MAS-SOLARTRAIL at $77 or TRAIL-SOLAR2 at $134 let you put the camera where the animals are and the panel where the sun is. Under canopy that is the difference between working and not.
  • Turn down what the camera does in winter. Video costs far more power than stills. Live streaming costs more than either. A camera set to 4K video with frequent triggers will outrun any panel here in June.
  • Check it in July, not January. A deployment that works beautifully in February proves nothing about the shortest week of the year.

4G Coverage, SIMs and What It Costs

Nineteen of these cameras run on a 4G SIM, and the two things nobody thinks about before buying are whether there is signal at the spot and what nineteen SIMs would cost.

Coverage at the camera, not on the map

Spark, One NZ and 2degrees all publish coverage maps, and those maps describe outdoor coverage at a reasonable height in open country. A trail camera lives strapped to a tree at chest height in a gully, behind a ridge, inside bush, or in a metal box. All of those cut signal.

Test before you commit. Walk to the exact spot with a phone on the network you intend to use, and check that you get a data connection rather than one bar of voice. If the phone struggles, the camera will too.

There is no fallback below 4G any more

All three New Zealand networks completed their 3G shutdowns on 31 March 2026. A camera that would once have dropped back to a slower connection now simply has no service. This matters most in exactly the places trail cameras go.

Band 28, at 700MHz, is the one that reaches. Low frequencies travel further and penetrate terrain and vegetation far better than the higher bands, which is why rural coverage is built on it. If a site is marginal, band 28 support is what makes the difference.

The booster is not an accessory, it is a fix

VIM-4GBOOST at $100 is an external aerial and repeater for exactly this problem. Getting the antenna up a few metres, or out of a gully and onto a ridge, routinely turns an unusable site into a working one. On a $611 camera in a marginal spot, it is the cheapest thing you can do.

Do the SIM maths before you buy several

Each 4G camera needs its own SIM and its own data plan, and that cost repeats every month for as long as the camera runs. Two cameras is two plans. Six cameras is six.

VIM-SOL4WIFI2-C at $767 runs four cameras through one hub on a single SIM. Against four individual 4G cameras at $311 to $445 each plus four data plans, the system is usually cheaper within the first year and much cheaper after that. If you are covering several points on one property, work it out before ordering individual units.

Data use depends on what you ask for. Still photos on motion are modest. Video clips are heavier. Continuous live streaming will use a great deal, so match the plan to how you will actually use it rather than the cheapest plan available.


Mistakes That Cause Returns

  1. Buying solar without checking the sun at that spot. Covered above. A panel in shade for most of a winter day is a decoration. Either mount an external panel where the sun is, or buy a model with an AA backup.
  2. Buying 4G without testing coverage at the exact location. The coverage map is not the tree you are strapping it to. Walk there with a phone first, and budget $99 for the booster if it is marginal.
  3. Buying several 4G cameras without counting the SIMs. Four cameras is four monthly plans forever. The four-camera system runs on one.
  4. Choosing a camera with a visible infrared glow. A red glow at night announces the camera to every animal and every person. Deer learn the spot and avoid it, and thieves take the camera. No-glow at 940nm, or black flash, is worth paying for. VI-WILDLIFEL6, VIM-PIR105, VIM-PIR108K-4K, VIM-WCW-4K and VIM-GHOST4G all use it.
  5. Mounting it at head height. The commonest placement error. A camera at 1.7m looks down at animals and gets the tops of backs. Waist height, roughly 0.6 to 1m, is where you get whole animals and identifiable faces.
  6. Pointing it at the sunrise or sunset. Trail cameras trigger on heat and movement, and a low sun crossing the frame produces hundreds of empty photos and flattens the battery. Face south, or at least away from the sun's path.
  7. Setting the trigger delay to zero and leaving it. A camera on a busy trail with no delay will fill a card and a battery in days. VIM-PIR107K-4K lets you set anything from 0 to 60 minutes between triggers. Use it.
  8. Recording 4K video when stills would do. Video is many times the power and data cost of a photo. If the question is "what came through here", stills answer it for a fraction of the battery.
  9. Leaving an unsecured camera somewhere it will be found. If the site has a history of theft, the metal box models exist for a reason, and GPS on VIM-4GWILD9 tells you where it went.

Key Specs Explained

Trigger speed

The delay between the sensor detecting something and the camera actually capturing it. On a track where animals move through at pace, a slow trigger produces photographs of empty trail or of a tail leaving the frame. VI-WILDLIFEL6 quotes 5 seconds, which suits a feeder or a gateway where animals linger. The sub-second units suit a trail.

PIR detection angle versus lens angle

An underrated pairing. If the sensor sees a narrower arc than the lens, the camera triggers only once the animal is already central and you lose the approach. VI-WILDLIFEL6 has a 120 degree PIR against a 70 degree lens, which is the right way round: it starts recording before the subject enters frame.

No-glow, low-glow and black flash

940nm infrared, described as no-glow or black flash, emits nothing a person or animal can see. 850nm, sometimes called low-glow, produces a visible red shimmer at the lens in darkness. On a camera left unattended, that glow is what gets it noticed and taken, and what teaches animals to route around it.

Night vision range

Consistently quoted at 20 metres across this range, and that figure is honest. Beyond it the frame is black, not dim. Twenty metres is roughly the width of a farm gateway or a bush track, which is what these are built for.

Resolution, and what it costs you

From HD to 4K at 30FPS, with stills from 24MP to 46MP. Higher resolution costs battery, card space and, on 4G units, data. Choose 4K where you need to identify a person or a plate, and 2K where you need to know what species walked past.

Dual lens

Two different things share this name. VIM-PIR107K-4K uses separate day and night sensors, so colour daylight and infrared night both come from optimised hardware instead of one compromised sensor. VIM-4GTRAIL and VIM-4GMINIDUALW use a wide lens plus a zoom lens, so one camera covers an area and still gets detail. Read which one a product means.

Optical zoom and PTZ

Optical zoom moves glass and keeps detail, unlike digital zoom which crops. VIM-4GTRAIL has 20X optical. PTZ adds physical pan and tilt so the camera follows movement rather than waiting for it to cross a fixed frame, which is what VIM-4GSOL does.

Time lapse

Photographs at a set interval regardless of motion. Useful for watching a food source over a season, a fence line, a slip, a construction site or plant growth, and for anything happening beyond PIR range where motion triggering will never fire.

Card capacity

Up to 512GB on VIM-PIR107K-4K. Use a high endurance card: trail cameras write in cold, damp conditions for months and ordinary cards fail under that.

Weatherproofing

IP66 on several models, which handles New Zealand rain. None of these are immersion rated. Mount so water runs off the housing rather than sitting on it, and keep the lens out of the drip line from a branch.


Where to Put It

None of this is on a spec sheet, and it decides more than the camera does.

Height and angle

Roughly waist height, 0.6 to 1 metre, tilted very slightly down. Head height points the camera at the tops of backs and misses faces entirely. For pigs and possums go lower. For people at a gateway, chest height gets faces.

Face away from the sun's path

In New Zealand the sun tracks across the northern sky, so a camera facing north gets a low sun in the frame morning and evening. That causes false triggers, blown-out images and a flat battery. Face it south, or across the track rather than along it.

Shoot across a trail, not down it

An animal walking towards the camera stays in the detection zone briefly and triggers late. An animal crossing the frame passes through the whole PIR arc and triggers reliably. Angle the camera at about 45 degrees to the track rather than straight down it.

Clear the foreground

Grass, fern and branches within a metre or two will move in the wind, trigger the camera all night and fill the card. Clear a metre in front of the lens, and check it again in spring when everything grows.

Think about what is behind the subject

Infrared reflects off close surfaces and blows out the image. A camera two metres from a fence post will light the post and leave the animal dark. Give yourself depth behind where the subject will be.

Mount to something that does not move

A sapling sways, and a swaying camera triggers on its own movement. Use a solid trunk, a strainer post or a purpose-driven stake.

Note the location

Six cameras across a block in winter bush all look identical from fifty metres away. Drop a pin, photograph the approach, or buy VIM-4GWILD9 and let the camera tell you where it is.

Set the date and time before you leave

A timestamp is what turns a photograph into a record. Every camera here stamps footage, and a camera set to the factory date produces evidence nobody can rely on.

Choose by Use

Predator and pest monitoring

Possums, rats, stoats, rabbits, wallabies. Usually a trap line or a bait station you check on a schedule anyway, so card-only is fine and no-glow matters because you do not want animals learning the spot. VI-WILDLIFEL6 at $177 for black flash and 5 months on AAs, or VIM-PIR108K-4K at $189 for up to 12 months and 4K.

If you are monitoring several stations across a block and want to know what is happening between visits, step up to a 4G unit so a hit shows up the same day rather than next month.

Deer, pigs, goats and tahr

Patterning animals before a hunt: what comes through, when, and how often. Trigger speed and no-glow matter most. VIM-PIR105 at $177, or VIM-GAMECAM4K at $200 for 4K with 8 months of standby and the option of adding an external solar panel later.

Stock and lambing

Checking a mob, a calving paddock or a water trough without driving out. VIM-4GWILD8 at $367 runs 24/7 on solar, or VIM-4GSOL at $367 if you want PTZ to look around the paddock rather than at one fixed spot.

A remote property, bach or block

Nobody there for weeks, no power, no WiFi. Solar plus 4G plus GPS. VIM-4GWILD9 at $357 or VIM-4GWILD4S at $613 for live 4K. Test the coverage on site first and budget for VIM-4GBOOST at $100 if it is marginal.

Native wildlife and conservation work

Kiwi, weka, bats, nesting birds. No-glow is essential because visible infrared disturbs nocturnal species, and time lapse is useful for a nest or a burrow entrance where motion triggering fires constantly or not at all. VIM-WCW-4K at $233 for the 46MP sensor and 18 months unattended. Keep well back from nests and follow any conditions on the land you are working.

Time lapse projects

A slip, a build, a planting, a river level, a seasonal food source. Any camera here with time lapse, powered by solar so it runs the whole season. Pair a card-only unit with MAS-SOLARTRAIL at $77 and you have a very cheap long-run setup.


FAQs

Do the 4G cameras need a subscription?

No subscription from us. Each 4G camera needs its own SIM with a data plan from Spark, One NZ or 2degrees, and that plan is the only ongoing cost. The four-camera system runs all four on a single SIM.

Will a 4G camera work where my phone has one bar?

Possibly not. Cameras sit low, in gullies and bush, sometimes inside metal, which all cut signal further than a phone held at head height. Test at the exact spot, and if it is marginal add the $99 signal booster and aerial. Since all 3G networks closed on 31 March 2026 there is no slower fallback.

How long does a solar trail camera really last?

The quoted figures, up to 18 months, assume good sun on the panel. In a New Zealand winter, with eight hours of daylight and weeks of overcast, expect considerably less. Buy a model with an AA backup, or mount an external panel where the sun actually falls.

What is the difference between no-glow and low-glow?

No-glow, also called black flash, uses 940nm infrared and emits nothing visible. Low-glow uses 850nm and shows a faint red shimmer at the lens in the dark. No-glow costs a little range and keeps the camera unnoticed, which matters both for animals and for theft.

How high should I mount it?

Waist height, roughly 0.6 to 1 metre, angled slightly down and about 45 degrees across the trail rather than along it. Head height is the most common mistake and gives you photographs of animals' backs.

Can I put a trail camera on public conservation land?

Attaching a camera to a tree or post on land you do not control is an installation, and DOC operates a permissions regime for activities on conservation land. Contact the local DOC office before installing anything. On private land you need the landowner's permission.

Is it legal to film people with a trail camera?

On your own property, generally yes. A camera pointed at a track, a boundary or a public road will capture people, and if you are recording for a business the Privacy Act 2020 applies. It must not point into a neighbour's home or any place where someone would reasonably expect privacy.

Do these record sound?

Some do. Audio is treated differently from video in New Zealand law: recording a conversation you are not part of carries up to two years under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961, and a camera left in a paddock is by definition not part of any conversation. If you do not need audio, turn it off.

What memory card should I use?

A high endurance card rated for continuous video, sized to the camera's stated limit. These run for months in cold, damp conditions and ordinary cards fail early under that. Capacities here go up to 512GB.
