Does this camera need WiFi or a SIM card?

No. It is a standalone camera with no network of any kind. Footage is written to an SD card up to 32GB and you either play it back on the 2.4 inch screen or take the card with you.

How long will a set of batteries last?

Up to five months on standby with eight AA cells, which are not included. Heavy triggering and long night recordings will shorten that considerably. A 12V 2A supply can be used instead where power is available.

How weatherproof is it?

It is rated IP54, which covers dust and splashing water rather than heavy driving rain or immersion. Mount it under an eave, in a shed doorway or on the sheltered side of a tree. If the position is fully exposed, choose an IP66 model instead.

Will animals see the night vision?

No. The camera uses black flash infrared, so there is no visible glow when it records at night. Night vision reaches about 20 metres.

What card does it take?

SD cards up to 32GB. Larger cards will not be recognised, so a 32GB card is the practical maximum for this model.

Can I record audio as well as video?

Yes. There is a built in microphone and speaker, and 1080p clips are recorded with sound. Time lapse can be set from five seconds to 24 hours where you want to capture slow changes instead.

Is it legal to use this camera on my property in New Zealand?

Monitoring land you own or manage is generally lawful, and that covers the ordinary reasons for putting a camera out: wildlife, stock, gates, tracks, sheds and equipment. Keep the camera pointed at what you are actually watching.

Audio is treated differently from video. Recording a conversation you are taking part in is generally lawful in New Zealand, but recording a private conversation you are not part of is interception under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961. This camera has a microphone, so if it will sit unattended somewhere people talk, turn the audio off and record video only.

The limits are about other people. If the camera also covers a neighbour's land, a road or a public track, keep the view to what you need and the footage secure: a business or farm recording people must follow the Privacy Act 2020, and even a householder can breach it if a recording is highly offensive. Never place a camera anywhere a person would reasonably expect privacy: making an intimate visual recording is a criminal offence under the Crimes Act 1961.
