Description

Cellular trackers are the ones people worry about, because they report a position from anywhere there is coverage and they are small enough to disappear inside a bumper or a bag lining.

The VIM-BUGDETECT10 sweeps 50MHz to 6GHz, which covers the cellular bands those trackers use along with WiFi and Bluetooth, and shows what it finds on an eight segment LED bar with six selectable sensitivity levels. An environment check tells you when local radio noise is too high for a reliable sweep, which is a more useful answer than a false negative.

Features

  • Cellular Tracker Detection: Covers the 4G and 5G cellular bands that vehicle and asset trackers report over, within a 50MHz to 6GHz sweep range.
  • Built For Vehicle Sweeps: The eight segment LED bar and six step sensitivity control are what you work with around wheel arches, bumpers and underbody panels where a tracker is usually fitted.
  • Bags And Personal Items: Small enough to work slowly through a backpack, a suitcase lining or a jacket when you want to confirm whether something is reporting your position.
  • Clear Status Panel: Front panel indicators cover power, detection mode, tracker detection, low battery and charging state.
  • Two Alert Modes: Beep or vibration, with a strong noise alert and a silent earphone option for sweeps you would rather keep to yourself.
  • Environment Check: Warns you when background radio activity is high enough to make a result unreliable, rather than quietly returning nothing.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Private Or Company Vehicle

The places a stick-on tracker ends up are predictable, and that is what makes a methodical sweep worth doing.

Switch the engine off, move your phone away, then work the wheel arches, both bumpers, under the sills and the boot floor with the sensitivity high. Drop it a level each time the LED bar climbs so the responding distance keeps shortening as you close in.

A Hire Car Or A Recent Purchase

A vehicle that has been in someone else's hands is worth ten minutes before it goes on a long trip.

Run the exterior first and the cabin second, paying attention to the OBD port under the dashboard, the boot trim and the space behind the rear seats. The environment check is useful here, because a car park full of other vehicles is a noisy place to sweep.

Luggage Before Travelling

Bags spend time out of sight at both ends of a journey, and a tracker in a lining is not something you would notice by feel.

Sweep the outside of the case first, then the lining, the wheels and any rigid panels. Work slowly, because a cellular tracker only transmits when it reports in, and a fast pass can miss the window.

How it Works

  1. Run the environment check first. If the surrounding radio noise is high, move the vehicle or the bag somewhere quieter before sweeping, because a reading taken in a noisy location is not worth much.
  2. Start at level three, the default, and sweep slowly at a constant distance from the surface while watching the eight segment bar rather than waiting for the alert.
  3. Step the sensitivity down each time the bar rises. Reducing sensitivity shortens the range the detector responds over, so a source that still registers at a low setting is close to the antenna.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.
  • Detecting Object: 4G and CDMA GPS tracker bugs and wireless transmitters
  • RF Detection Range: 50 MHz to 6 GHz
  • Detecting Distance: About 3 to 5 metres, varying with the environment
  • Signal Strength Indication: 8 LED bar
  • Sensitivity Levels: 6 levels, level 3 by default
  • Warning Modes: LED, beep, vibration, strong noise alert, earphone silent detection
  • Power: 5V DC switching adaptor, or AAA / UM-4 NiMH battery x 4
  • Dimensions: 116 x 70 x 33 mm
  • Weight: About 160 g without batteries

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of trackers will this find?

Trackers that report over a cellular network, which is the large majority of vehicle and asset trackers sold. They fall inside the 50MHz to 6GHz sweep range, as do WiFi and Bluetooth devices. A tracker that logs positions to internal memory without transmitting will not show up, because there is nothing to detect.

Can I use it underneath a vehicle?

Yes, and that is where most of the useful work happens. Move the antenna slowly around the wheel arches, the bumper cavities and the underbody at a steady distance from the metal, watching the LED bar and stepping the sensitivity down as it climbs.

What is the realistic detection distance?

The specified figure is about 3 to 5 metres, but that is for a source actively transmitting. Real range depends on the transmit power and on what is in between, so a tracker inside a metal bumper reads shorter than the same tracker sitting on a seat.

Why does it sometimes report a noisy environment?

Because a sweep taken next to a mobile tower, a busy car park or a building full of WiFi will not produce a trustworthy result. The environment check is there to tell you that rather than let you finish a sweep that never had a chance of working.

How is it powered?

Either from the 5V DC switching adaptor or from four AAA or UM-4 NiMH rechargeable cells, so it works plugged in at a bench or on batteries in a car park.

Am I allowed to sweep for trackers and bugs?

Yes. Checking a space or a vehicle you own or occupy, your car, your home, a room you are staying in, for devices recording or following you is your business. Two practical limits are worth knowing. If you find something, photograph it where it sits before you touch it, because removing it destroys the evidence of who put it there. And a detector reports a signal, not an owner, so treat a hit as a reason to look rather than as proof of who is responsible.
