Description

Three problems, one unit. A radio sweep finds anything transmitting, an optical lens finder deals with cameras that record to a card and never broadcast at all, and a masking generator protects a conversation while it is happening rather than after the fact.

The VIM-BUGDETECT09 covers 50MHz to 6GHz for GSM, 4G, 5G, WiFi and Bluetooth sources, drives an eight LED signal bar with a sensitivity tuner for closing in, and offers LED, beep, acoustic, vibration and silent earphone alerts. It weighs about 170 g and runs from an adaptor or four AAA cells.

Features

  • Wideband RF Sweep: Covers 50MHz to 6GHz, which takes in GSM, 4G and 5G cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth, so a single pass covers most of what transmits.
  • Optical Lens Finder: Finds camera lenses by the light they reflect back, which is the only method that works on a camera recording to a memory card with its radio switched off.
  • Masking Generator: An 85dB audible noise output raises the background around a conversation so a nearby recorder captures the room rather than the words.
  • Live Listening: An FM acoustic mode lets you listen to a demodulated signal, which is how you confirm a suspect emission is an open microphone rather than a printer.
  • Sensitivity Tuner: Adjusts the responding distance so you can work down from a room-wide sweep to a single object without the alarm simply staying on.
  • Five Alert Modes: LED, beep, acoustic, vibration and earphone silent detection, so the sweep can be as visible or as quiet as the room requires.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Meeting Room Before A Confidential Discussion

The value of a sweep is that it happens before the conversation, not after somebody wonders.

Work the room on RF first, then run the lens finder across the shelves, the smoke detector, the AV gear and anything facing the table. If the room cannot be cleared to your satisfaction, the masking generator gives you a second line while the meeting runs.

A Hotel Room Or Short Stay Rental

A room you did not furnish, that other people hold keys to, is where a lens finder earns its place.

A camera saving to a card broadcasts nothing, so the RF sweep will not see it. Darken the room, look through the finder and scan slowly across the smoke detector, the alarm clock, the wardrobe, the power adaptors and anything on a shelf at bed height.

Your Own Home Or Car After Access By Others

A tenancy change, a repair visit, a relationship that ended badly. All of them leave a period where someone else had access.

Sweep on RF for anything transmitting, then use the lens finder on the rooms and the cabin. Doing both matters, because the two methods find different things and neither one covers the other's blind spot.

How it Works

  1. Sweep on RF first with the sensitivity high, watching the eight LED bar. When it lifts, use the acoustic or FM listening mode to hear what the emission actually is, then wind the sensitivity down as you close in.
  2. Switch to the lens finder for anything that does not transmit. Darken the room, look through the viewing window and scan slowly, because a lens returns a hard bright point rather than a general glare.
  3. Use the masking generator only where a conversation genuinely needs protecting. Place it between the people talking and the likeliest recorder, and keep it running for the whole conversation rather than part of it.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.
  • Detecting Range: 50 MHz to 6.0 GHz
  • Detecting Distance: Wireless bug at 2 mW up to 6 m on beep and 4.5 m on acoustic; 10 mW 2.4 GHz wireless camera up to 6 m; 10 mW 5.8 GHz wireless camera up to 0.9 m; GSM phone up to 15 m; smartphone up to 4.5 m; 4G and 5G up to 7.5 m
  • Signal Strength Indication: 8 LEDs
  • Noise Generator Output: 85 dB
  • Warning Modes: LED indication, beep alarm, acoustic display, vibration, earphone silent detection
  • Sensitivity Tuner: Adjusts detecting distance and reduces environmental interference
  • Power: 5V DC switching adaptor, or AAA / UM-4 rechargeable or dry battery x 4
  • Dimensions: 116 x 70 x 33 mm without antenna
  • Weight: About 170 g

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lens finder for if the RF sweep already covers cameras?

The two methods find different things. An RF sweep only sees a camera while it is transmitting, so a unit recording to a memory card, or a wired camera on a cable, is invisible to it. The lens finder works on the optics instead, which means the camera's power and radio state do not matter.

How does the masking generator protect a conversation?

It raises the audible background around the people speaking, so a recorder in the room captures a much poorer ratio of speech to noise. It is not a radio jammer and it does not switch anything off. Its effect is on what a microphone picks up, which is why placement between the conversation and the likely recorder matters more than volume.

Can I listen to a signal it has found?

Yes. The FM acoustic mode lets you hear the demodulated audio, which is usually the fastest way to tell an open microphone from ordinary equipment. Feedback through the detector when you speak is a strong indication of a live audio device in the room.

What are the realistic detection distances?

They vary by source, and the specification lists them individually. A 2 mW wireless bug reads at about 6 m, a 2.4 GHz camera at about 6 m, a 5.8 GHz camera at about 0.9 m, and a GSM handset at up to 15 m. The 5.8 GHz figure is the one to note, because it means slow, close work rather than a walk-past.

May I use the masking function wherever I like?

Use it to protect your own conversations, in your own home, your own vehicle, or a room you have hired for a private meeting. Do not use it to interfere with a recording someone is lawfully entitled to make, such as a formal interview or a proceeding you are a party to. It is an audible masking device and not a radio jammer, which matters because transmitting to block radio signals is separately regulated in New Zealand under the Radiocommunications Act 1989.
