Description

Most of what people worry about is now wireless, and wireless leaves a trace. The VIM-BUGDETECT12 looks for it across 50MHz to 5.4GHz, which covers WiFi, Bluetooth, DECT and 4G and 5G cellular.

Two antennas do two jobs: the wideband one for sweeping a room, the directional log-periodic one for walking in on whatever the sweep found. A separate magnetic sensor finds magnet-mounted trackers that are not transmitting at all. A 20 step LED meter and audio feedback do the guiding, there is no app, and the 1500mAh cell runs 20 to 45 hours.

Features

  • Dual-antenna coverage: Wide-band plus microwave log-periodic antennas improve range and enable directional pinpointing.
  • 5G cellular coverage: Detects 4G/5G activity across 50MHz to 5.4GHz.
  • Modern protocol detection: Identifies Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 4G/5G and DECT activity from cameras, mics and trackers.
  • Magnetic tracker finding: Magnetic-field sensing with visual and audible alerts helps uncover dormant vehicle trackers.
  • 20-level LED tracking: Fine signal-strength steps and audio feedback help speed up source location.
  • Charging options: Recharge via USB cable or AC adapter (no apps required).
  • Long runtime: 20 to 45 h battery life supports multi-location sweeps without frequent recharging.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Hotel Room Or Short Stay Rental

Somewhere you are sleeping, that other people have keys to, and that you did not choose the furniture in.

Start with the wideband antenna and walk the room slowly, paying attention to smoke detectors, alarm clocks, power adaptors and anything with a clear view of the bed. When the meter climbs, swap to the directional antenna and close in.

A Car You Think Is Being Tracked

The trackers that matter most are the ones that sleep between reports, which means an RF-only detector can walk straight past them.

The magnetic sensor is for exactly that. Run it along the wheel arches, the bumpers, under the sills and around the boot floor, 50 to 150mm from the metal, and it reacts to the magnet holding the tracker on rather than to any signal.

A Meeting Before The Meeting

Ten minutes with a detector before people arrive is worth more than any amount of worrying afterwards.

Sweep the table, the power outlets, the AV gear and the chairs. Twenty to forty five hours of battery means the unit is ready when you pick it up rather than flat in a drawer.

How it Works

  1. Fit the wideband antenna and walk the room with sensitivity high, watching the 20 step LED meter rather than listening for the alarm.
  2. When the meter lifts, drop the sensitivity and change to the directional antenna. Lowering sensitivity as you get closer is what turns a general reading into a location.
  3. For trackers that are not transmitting, switch to magnetic mode and sweep 50 to 150mm from bodywork and metal fittings, where a magnet-mounted unit gives itself away.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it find devices that are not transmitting?

The magnetic sensor can, for anything held on by a magnet, which covers most stick-on vehicle trackers. A device that is switched off and not magnetic will not show on either mode. That is what a non-linear junction detector is for.

How do I use the two antennas?

The wideband antenna is for covering ground. The directional log-periodic antenna is for narrowing down once something has registered. Using the directional one for the whole sweep will make you miss things.

Does it need an app or an internet connection?

No. Everything happens on the unit, through the LED meter and the audio. Nothing is sent anywhere.

What does it actually detect?

Bluetooth, WiFi, DECT and 4G and 5G cellular activity between 50MHz and 5.4GHz, down to a sensitivity of 0.03mW. The listed camera detection areas are 25 square metres for a 10mW transmitter, or 36 square metres at 1.2GHz.

How long does it run?

20 to 45 hours on the built in 1500mAh cell, depending on how much of that time the alarm is active. It charges over USB or from the supplied adaptor.

Am I allowed to sweep a room I am staying in?

Yes. Checking a space you occupy, a hotel room, a rental, your own home, your own car, for devices recording you is your business and nobody else's. Two practical limits worth knowing. If you find something, photograph it in place before you touch it: removing a device destroys the evidence of who put it there. And a detector tells you a signal exists, not who owns it, so treat a hit as a reason to look, not as proof.
