Description

Camera detectors find cameras. A voice recorder in a bag or taped under a desk produces no video and no radio signal at all, it simply fills a memory card, and a camera sweep walks straight past it.

The VIM-CAMFINDER3 adds a dedicated voice recorder sensor alongside RF scanning and an infrared lens finder, so all three categories are covered by one unit. An LCD shows signal strength as a number rather than a row of lights, which makes a reading something you can note down instead of something you have to interpret. 150 g, 103 x 62 x 40 mm, with three months of standby between uses.

Features

  • Voice Recorder Sensor: A dedicated mode for active recording devices, which are exactly what a camera-only detector and an RF-only sweep both miss. It closes the audio gap in an otherwise thorough check.
  • LCD Signal Readout: Signal strength appears as a number rather than a bar of LEDs, so a reading can be written down and compared between rooms instead of judged by eye.
  • Three Methods In One: RF scanning, voice recorder sensing and infrared lens finding, covering transmitters, audio recorders and camera optics without changing tools.
  • 940nm Infrared Mode: Finds cameras running invisible infrared illumination for recording in darkness, which produce no visible light at all.
  • Compact And Quiet: 150 g at 103 x 62 x 40 mm with a sliding mechanism, small enough for a check before a meeting without signalling that a sweep is happening.
  • Three Month Standby: Holds charge between uses, so the unit is ready when you pick it up rather than flat in a drawer. 2 to 2.5 hours of active use per session.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Meeting Before It Starts

Phones are not the only recording risk in a room. A voice recorder in a bag, a jacket or a piece of furniture captures everything and transmits nothing, so a radio sweep will never find it.

Run the voice recorder sensor before people arrive, follow with an RF pass for wireless transmitters, then confirm with the lens finder. Three passes, three different things being looked for.

An Office Handling Confidential Work

Legal, financial and design work all generate conversations worth recording to somebody, and a planted recorder is cheaper and harder to spot than a camera.

The LCD readout is useful here because it gives you a number per location, which turns a sweep into something you can repeat and compare rather than a one-off impression.

Your Own Home Or Vehicle After Access By Others

A separation, a flatmate moving out, a repair visit. All of them leave a window where the space was not only yours.

Sweep all three ways. The voice recorder sensor is the one to run first, because an audio device is the cheapest thing to plant and the least likely to be found by a camera-focused check.

How it Works

  1. Charge over Micro USB, which takes 3 to 4 hours from flat. The LCD comes up on power-on and nothing needs pairing, installing or connecting.
  2. Run the RF mode and read the signal strength off the LCD as you move through the space. The voice recorder sensor works alongside it and flags audio recording devices separately from transmitters.
  3. Switch to the infrared lens finder and confirm visually. Cross-referencing what the lens finder sees against what the RF pass found is how you work out what each detection actually is.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of voice recorders does the sensor find?

Active recording devices that give off a detectable electronic signature while running. A purely mechanical or fully passive recorder with no electronic emission may not register, though those are now rare. The sensor is looking for a device that is switched on and working, not one sitting flat in a drawer.

Can I use the LCD reading as a record?

Yes, and that is most of the reason for having one. Note the number and the position for each part of a room, and a second sweep later becomes a comparison rather than a fresh guess. A bar of LEDs cannot give you that.

How does this compare with professional TSCM equipment?

This is a field sweep tool, not a TSCM platform. It covers three common categories in something you can carry. Professional equipment covers wider frequency ranges, adds non-linear junction detection for devices that are switched off entirely, and gives you spectrum analysis. Different tools for different stakes.

Is 2.5 hours of active runtime enough?

For targeted sweeps, yes. A meeting room takes 10 to 15 minutes and a floor of six to eight offices takes about an hour. The three month standby matters more in practice, because it means the unit still has charge when you reach for it.

Does the voice recorder sensor replace an RF bug detector?

No, it works alongside one. The sensor is aimed at audio recording devices specifically. An RF bug detector covers a much broader span for transmitters, cellular bugs and trackers. Each finds things the other cannot.

Am I allowed to sweep a room for cameras?

Yes. Checking a space you occupy, a hotel room, a rental, a changing room you are using, your own home or vehicle, is your business and needs nobody's permission. If you do find a camera in a private space, do not pull it out. Photograph it exactly where it sits, leave the room, and call the Police. Making an intimate visual recording is a criminal offence in New Zealand under the Crimes Act 1961, and removing the device destroys the evidence of who installed it.
