Description

Multi-mode detectors split one battery across radio scanning, night vision and lens finding, and typically run somewhere between 2 and 10 hours. If you already carry an RF detector, none of that second and third mode is doing anything for you.

The VIM-CAMFINDER does one job. It finds camera lenses by LED reflection through a red viewfinder, it has a four bar proximity indicator to guide you in, and it puts the whole 950mAh cell behind that single function for 25 hours of continuous use and six months of standby. There is nothing to configure and nothing to set wrong.

Features

  • 25 Hours Of Runtime: The 950mAh cell goes behind one function rather than three, which is where the runtime comes from. Enough for a large property or several days of work without a mid-task charge.
  • Six Month Standby: Holds charge in storage between uses, so it works when you pull it out of a bag rather than needing a night on the charger first.
  • Nothing To Configure: One detection mode, no thresholds, no frequency selection, no app. There is no setting to get wrong, and learning to use it takes about a minute.
  • Four Bar Proximity Indicator: The bar climbs from one to four as the viewfinder nears a lens, so you get a graduated reading rather than a yes or no, and you can locate a device without taking a fixture apart.
  • Pocket Sized: 120 x 60 x 30 mm and 120 g, small enough to sit alongside other tools in a kit without being the reason the bag is heavy.
  • Works Regardless Of Power State: Optical detection responds to the glass, so a camera that is wired, dormant, or recording to a card shows up the same as one that is streaming.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Large Property Room By Room

Offices, complexes and multi-room properties take hours of optical sweeping, and most lens finders run flat partway through.

Twenty five hours covers a very large number of rooms at 10 to 15 minutes each. The four bar indicator lets you clear or confirm each surface without stopping to interpret anything, which is what keeps the pace up across a long day.

A Check At Short Notice

Not every sweep is planned. A concern gets raised, a venue changes, a room needs checking before a meeting in half an hour.

Six months of standby means the unit is ready when it comes out of storage. Power on, sweep, done. There is no app, no pairing and no waiting for a charge.

A Hotel Room Or Rental While Travelling

If your concern is cameras rather than transmitters, a single purpose tool is the one that actually gets carried and used.

Darken the room, look through the red viewfinder and scan the smoke detector, the power adaptors, the alarm clock, the wardrobe and anything facing the bed. The bar rising from one to four tells you when you are on top of something.

How it Works

  1. Power it on. There is no pairing, no calibration and no app connection, so it is working within a couple of seconds of being switched on.
  2. Move the viewfinder across every surface at close range. A camera lens reflects the LED beam back as a bright dot visible through the red filter, while ordinary surfaces give back nothing comparable.
  3. Watch the four bar indicator as you close the distance. It rises from one to four as you approach, and a peak reading at very short range is your confirmation of where the lens actually is.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.
  • Detection Method: LED optical lens reflection

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does this fit alongside other tools?

It is the optical part of a kit. RF detectors find wireless transmitters, and this finds physical camera lenses whether or not they are transmitting, dormant or wired. It complements signal-based tools rather than replacing them, and it is the cheaper half of a proper sweep.

Why choose this over a multi-mode detector?

Runtime and simplicity. A multi-mode unit divides its battery across radio scanning, night vision and lens finding, which is where the 2 to 10 hour figures come from. This puts all 950mAh behind one function and gets 25 hours. If you already carry an RF detector, a second one bundled into a lens finder is not adding anything.

Will it find a camera hidden behind a cover?

Only if the lens itself is exposed. The detection depends on light reflecting off glass, so a camera behind an opaque cover, fabric or a non-transparent panel needs RF detection or a physical inspection instead. Nothing optical can see through something that is not transparent.

Can more than one person share it?

Yes. There are no user profiles, no accounts and no pairing, so it behaves identically for whoever picks it up. Twenty five hours of runtime covers several people's use before it needs charging.

How does the four bar indicator compare with a signal meter?

Same idea, different physics. An RF signal meter measures electromagnetic intensity at a distance. This measures the intensity of an optical reflection as the viewfinder approaches a lens. Both guide you toward a source, but the bar here specifically confirms you are looking at glass rather than at an emission.

Am I allowed to sweep a room for cameras?

Yes. Checking a space you occupy, a hotel room, a rental, a changing room you are using, your own home or vehicle, is your business and needs nobody's permission. If you do find a camera in a private space, do not pull it out. Photograph it exactly where it sits, leave the room, and call the Police. Making an intimate visual recording is a criminal offence in New Zealand under the Crimes Act 1961, and removing the device destroys the evidence of who installed it.
