Description

A standard lens sweep is done with the lights on. A night vision camera is designed for the lights being off, and it lights the room with 940nm infrared that the human eye cannot see at all. Sweep one way and you miss the other.

The VIM-CAMFINDER6 has a mode for each. Mode A looks for cameras actively emitting infrared, which only works in a darkened room and is the only way to catch a night vision device while it is running. Mode B bounces the detector's own infrared off camera glass in normal lighting, which finds a lens whatever its power state. A 600mAh cell runs 10 hours, and a test lens is included so you can learn what a real hit looks like before it matters.

Features

  • Night Vision Camera Detection: Mode A finds cameras emitting 940nm infrared to record in the dark. That emission is invisible to the eye but shows clearly through the viewfinder in an unlit room.
  • Optical Lens Detection: Mode B reflects infrared off camera glass in normal lighting, so a lens shows up whether the camera is active, dormant, wired or battery powered.
  • 10 Hour Runtime: The 600mAh cell covers a run of rooms in one go without stopping to charge, and refills in about 2 hours over Micro USB.
  • Test Lens Included: A calibration lens reproduces what a real camera lens looks like through the viewfinder, so you can practise before you are sweeping a room that matters.
  • Slim Profile: 137 x 56 x 17 mm, flat enough to carry in a jacket pocket and use without making a production of it.
  • Two Passes, One Tool: Running both modes in their correct lighting is what gives full optical coverage, and it takes about ten minutes for a normal room.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Hotel Room Or Holiday Rental

The place people most often want checked, and the place a night vision camera makes most sense to whoever installed it.

Run Mode A first with the lights out and the curtains drawn, looking for an infrared source where none should be. Then put the lights on and run Mode B across the smoke detector, the alarm clock, the power adaptors, the wardrobe and anything facing the bed.

An Office Or Meeting Room After Hours

An empty building at night is exactly the condition a night vision camera is built for, and exactly when nobody is there to notice.

Sweep in Mode A during the quiet hours, treating any infrared source that is not part of the building's own security system as something to explain. Follow with a Mode B pass during the day to cover cameras with no infrared at all.

A Changing Room Or Bathroom You Are About To Use

A short, close-range check of the fittings before you undress is a reasonable thing to do and takes a minute.

Mode B is the one to use here, scanned slowly across hooks, vents, mirror surrounds, shower fittings and anything mounted at eye or waist height. A lens gives back a small hard point rather than the broad glare you get off chrome.

How it Works

  1. Charge the unit over Micro USB and spend a minute with the supplied test lens so you know what a genuine reflection looks like through the viewfinder before you need to recognise one.
  2. Run Mode A with every light off and the room as dark as you can make it. Active infrared sources appear as visible points that ordinary electronics do not produce.
  3. Put the lights back on and run Mode B over the same ground. The detector's own infrared beam reflects off camera glass, and each confirmed lens shows as a bright dot against a clean background.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.
  • Detection Method: Dual mode infrared optical

  • Battery: 600mAh rechargeable, 10 hours continuous
  • Charging: Micro USB, 2 hours to full
  • Viewfinder: 36 mm diameter
  • Dimensions: 137 x 56 x 17 mm

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it need two modes?

Because they rely on different physics. Mode A detects infrared that a night vision camera is emitting, which only exists while the camera is running in the dark. Mode B detects the reflection of the detector's own infrared off a lens, which works in any lighting and regardless of power state. Neither mode covers what the other one does.

Will Mode A find a camera that has no infrared?

No. Mode A is looking for an active infrared emission, so a camera recording by ambient light alone gives it nothing. That camera is Mode B's job. Running both in their correct lighting conditions is what makes the sweep complete.

Does this replace an RF detector?

No, it is purely optical. It finds cameras by their lens or their infrared emission, and it will tell you nothing about an audio bug, a cellular transmitter or a GPS tracker. Pair it with an RF detector if those are also a concern.

What is the test lens for?

It gives you a known good target. Put it somewhere in a room and practise finding it through the viewfinder, because the difference between a lens reflection and a bright bit of chrome is obvious once you have seen both and easy to get wrong if you have not.

Is 10 hours enough for a run of rooms?

Comfortably. Each room needs two passes, one dark and one lit, which comes to roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Ten hours of runtime covers a working day of sweeping with margin left over.

Am I allowed to sweep a room for cameras?

Yes. Checking a space you occupy, a hotel room, a rental, a changing room you are using, your own home or vehicle, is your business and needs nobody's permission. If you do find a camera in a private space, do not pull it out. Photograph it exactly where it sits, leave the room, and call the Police. Making an intimate visual recording is a criminal offence in New Zealand under the Crimes Act 1961, and removing the device destroys the evidence of who installed it.
