Description

The VIM-MX4K action camera sunglasses put a 4K camera in a pair of UV400 sunglasses you would wear anyway, so your point of view gets recorded without a helmet mount, a chest rig or a hand on a camera.

4K Ultra HD at 30fps in H.265, 24 megapixel stills on a button press while the video keeps running, a 65 degree lens that frames roughly what you are looking at, and 32GB of internal memory so there is no card to lose. The TR90 frame takes interchangeable TAC lenses. Battery is the tradeoff to plan around: about 30 minutes of continuous 4K from the 500mAh cell.

Features

Records in 4K: True 4K Ultra HD at 30fps, written as MP4 with the H.265 codec so the file sizes stay manageable at that resolution.
24MP stills while filming: One button press takes a 24 megapixel photo, and it works while video is still recording.
Real sunglasses first: Interchangeable TAC lenses with full UV400 protection, so these work as sunglasses whether or not you are recording.
Wearable for a full day: A TR90 frame, the flexible technical material used in sports eyewear, keeps the weight and the pressure points down over long sessions.
32GB built in, no card to lose: All video and stills save to internal memory. There is no microSD slot, and files come off over USB Type-C.
You know when it is recording: A vibration motor and LED indicators confirm the state without you taking your eyes off what you are doing.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Hands free point of view on the trail

Mountain biking, hiking or trail running, where a handheld camera is out of the question and a helmet mount is one more thing to rig. The 65 degree lens records roughly what you are looking at, the vibration motor confirms it started, and the UV400 lenses are doing their normal job the whole time.

On the water and in the boat

Fishing, paddling or working on deck. Polarised UV protection cuts the glare off the water while the camera captures what you see over the gunwale. Battery life is the constraint to plan around: about 30 minutes of continuous 4K, so record the moments rather than the whole session.

Documenting work at eye level

Site walks, equipment checks and anything you would otherwise photograph one handed while holding something else. Eye level 4K with 24MP stills on demand gives you a record from the angle you actually inspected it, and 32GB of internal memory means nothing to fumble with in the field.

How it Works

Charge and wear: Top the 500mAh cell up over USB Type-C, then put the glasses on. The camera sits in the frame and points where you are looking.
Press once to record: A single button starts 4K video at 30fps. The vibration motor and LED confirm it, so you are not guessing. Press again for a 24MP still without stopping the video.
Offload over USB-C: Plug into a computer and the 32GB internal memory mounts as a drive. Drag the files off. There is no card to remove and no app to install.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it record audio as well as video?

Yes. It offers video plus audio recording through a built-in microphone, so audio is captured alongside the video.

How long will it record on a charge?

About 30 minutes of continuous 4K from the 500mAh battery. That is the honest constraint on this design: a camera in a spectacle frame has very little room for a cell, so plan on recording the parts that matter rather than a whole session.

Is the memory built in, or do I need a card?

Built in, 32GB of it. There is no microSD slot, so everything saves to internal storage and comes off over the USB Type-C cable.

Can I take photos while recording video?

Yes. A single button press captures a 24 megapixel still without interrupting the video recording.

Can I swap the lenses?

Yes. The TAC lenses are interchangeable and carry full UV400 protection, so the glasses work as ordinary sunglasses whether or not the camera is running.

Where can I use a camera like this in New Zealand?

Filming your own activity in a public place is ordinary and lawful here, which covers trails, beaches, roads and open ground. Two limits are worth knowing. Places where people reasonably expect privacy, such as changing rooms, bathrooms and private homes, are off limits without consent, and the Crimes Act 1961 treats intimate visual recording as a serious offence. Audio is treated more strictly than video: the Crimes Act 1961 limits recording conversations and the Privacy Commissioner regards audio as far more intrusive, so be aware of what conversations you capture. Venues, workplaces and events may also set their own rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
