Description

An excavator parked on a Waikato job site, a generator out on hire in Christchurch, a pump left at a quarry: plant sits for months where nobody checks on it daily, and a tracker that needs charging every few weeks does not suit that. Per-unit tracking plans add up across a fleet long before anything goes missing.

The VIM-4GCONT3 fits out of sight on the machine, by magnet or bolts, and reports its position once a day for up to 10 years on a sealed battery, over 4G from Spark, One NZ or 2degrees, with no platform fee. Pull it off the steel and a light sensor on the base sends a removal alarm.

Features

  • Up to 10 year sealed battery: One report a day for up to 10 years on a sealed 20,000mAh cell with no charging port. Reporting more often or a weak signal shortens it, and a spent unit is replaced, not recharged.
  • Removal alarm, on by default: A light sensor on the base triggers the moment light reaches it after the unit is lifted off the machine, so a tracker that is found and pulled off still reports it.
  • No platform fee per machine: The tracking app costs nothing to use, whether it covers one digger or a whole hire fleet. Each unit's SIM plan is the only running cost.
  • Magnets plus two bolt ears: Strong magnets hold it on steel for a quick fit, and the four supplied screws through its two end ears make it permanent. Use the screws on machinery that moves or vibrates. No wiring.
  • Tilt and collision alarms: Reports a machine tipped past an angle you set between 20 and 180 degrees, or a hard impact. Tilt is switched on by text command, and the impact threshold is adjustable. Collision alerts do not run in storage mode.
  • GPS, WiFi and mobile tower positioning: Satellite fixes in the open, with nearby WiFi networks and mobile towers as the fallback under a shed roof or between parked plant, as long as mobile signal still reaches it.
  • 4G on Spark, One NZ and 2degrees: A standard Micro SIM from any of the three connects, so there is no specialist IoT plan to buy. Coverage decides where it can report.
  • IP67 dust and water rating: Dust-tight and rated for temporary immersion, which covers rain, mud and dust on the outside of a machine. It is not rated for water blasting or permanent submersion.
  • 1,000 positions stored offline: In a dead zone it keeps logging and uploads the backlog when the network returns. At one report a day, that buffer holds more than two years of fixes.
  • Daily, scheduled and motion reporting: Report once a day by default, at up to four set times, on chosen weekdays or every 2 to 30 days while plant is in storage. Motion and static mode reports more often while moving than parked, with an optional vibration alarm.
  • Emergency live tracking: Switch a unit to live reporting every 30 seconds to 5 minutes for a set period when a machine moves unexpectedly. The command takes effect when the unit next wakes, up to 24 hours later on the default daily schedule, and live tracking uses the battery far faster than daily reports.
  • Low battery alarm: Warns before the cell runs down, so a replacement unit goes on before that machine stops reporting.
  • Configured by text message: APN, admin number, reporting mode and alarms are set by SMS commands sent to each unit, so the SIM plan must carry SMS, not data alone.
  • Status lights you can turn off: A green satellite light and a red network light confirm the install, go dark while it sleeps, and can be switched off completely, so a hidden unit does not give itself away.

Applications

Plant on a construction site

An excavator or loader sits on site for the length of a job, parked among other contractors' gear. Fitted out of sight with no steel over it, the tracker reports once a day, and the removal alarm reports it if the unit is taken off.

Hire equipment out with customers

Generators, lighting towers and compact plant leave the yard for weeks or months. The daily position shows which customer site each unit is on, and tilt and collision alarms report a machine that is tipped or hit.

Pumps and gear at remote sites

Pumps, generators and site equipment left at a quarry, a forestry block or a pump station often sit in patchy coverage. The tracker keeps logging at its set interval and uploads the stored positions when the signal returns.

How it Works

  1. Load the SIM: Take off the back cover, insert a Micro SIM on a plan with data and SMS, and close the cover with the 8 small screws supplied loose in the box. A Phillips screwdriver does the job and is not included.
  2. Configure by text: Send the setup commands from your phone: server details, admin number, reporting mode and the alarms you want. Set the time zone at the same time, because it ships on UTC+8. The green and red lights confirm a satellite fix and a network connection.
  3. Fit it to the machine: On anything that moves or vibrates, bolt it through both ears with the 4 supplied screws, nuts and washers; the magnets suit steel that stays put. Steel over the top, or the top facing the ground, cuts the signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an asset tracker?

An asset tracker is a GPS tracker that stays on equipment long term. This one reports where a machine is every day over 4G, runs up to 10 years on a sealed battery, and raises an alarm if it is pulled off or hit, or tipped once tilt is set by text.

Does a GPS tracker need a SIM card?

Yes. This tracker takes a standard Micro SIM, which is not supplied, and reports over 4G like a phone. A SIM from Spark, One NZ or 2degrees works. Pick a plan with SMS as well as data, because the reporting modes and alarms are all set by text message.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 10 years at the default one report a day, on a sealed 20,000mAh cell that loses under 1% a year in storage. Reporting more often, weak signal and a hot mounting spot all shorten that. When the cell is spent, the unit is replaced rather than recharged.

Where should you hide a GPS tracker on machinery?

Out of sight, with no metal over it. Reception is best with the top facing the sky; metal over the tracker, or the top facing the ground, gives it a bad signal. If it sits behind a panel, check in the app that it still reports with the panel closed.

Are there monthly fees?

No platform fee. The tracking app is free to use across as many machines as you fit. Each tracker needs its own SIM plan, and that plan is the only running cost. There is no tracking subscription to sign up for or renew on any unit.

Where does the tracking data go?

Over the SIM's mobile data to the tracking platform the unit is set to report to, where the free app reads it. The server address is set by text message during setup. The tracker keeps up to 1,000 positions itself only while it cannot reach the network.

Is it legal to track my own machinery in New Zealand?

Yes, for machinery you own or control, and that is the ordinary use. For equipment out on hire, write the tracking into the hire agreement so the hirer knows, and tell staff who operate tracked machines, because the Privacy Act 2020 covers location data about an identifiable person. Where the law bites is on people: tracking a person without their consent can be an offence, and the Crimes Legislation (Stalking and Harassment) Amendment Act 2025, in force since 26 May 2026, treats tracking someone as a specified act. This is general product information, not legal advice.
