Audio is treated differently from location in New Zealand law, and more strictly. Listening to a conversation you are part of, or recording in your own vehicle where the people in it have been told, is generally lawful. Intercepting a private conversation you are not part of, using a device like this one, is an offence under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961 and carries real penalties.
