A camera that only records in infrared gives you a grey figure. The VIM-4GSOL3 carries four white floodlight LEDs reaching 30 metres, so when something trips the PIR the scene comes up in full colour and clothing, vehicles and faces stay recognisable.

It records 1920x1080 through a 3 to 6mm lens with a 160 degree field of view, and the PTZ head covers 355 degrees horizontally and 120 vertically. Two infrared LEDs at 840nm cover 30 metres when you would rather not light the place up, PIR detection reaches 12 metres across a 120 degree arc, and a siren can be triggered by motion or from the app. An 8 Watt panel that swivels a full 360 degrees keeps six 2500mAh cells charged, and footage goes to a microSD card up to 128GB, local storage or the cloud. The housing is IP65.

This solar 4G flood light camera suits driveways, yards, sheds and other outdoor areas where running mains power or network cables is difficult. Once mounted with its solar panel in good light, it can watch entrances and open spaces continuously, trigger recording and lighting when people enter the PIR detection zone, and let multiple users check the live feed or stored clips from their phones when activity occurs.

How it Works

Mount the camera and aim the panel: Fix the 2kg unit where the PIR will see across a path rather than straight down it, then swivel the 8 Watt panel toward open sky. There is no mains lead.
Insert a data SIM or join WiFi: A 4G SIM on bands B1 to B40 works where there is no broadband. If a router is in range you can use WiFi live view instead.
Set the light and the siren: Choose whether the white LEDs come on with the PIR or stay off for infrared only, set the siren to fire on motion or on demand, and pick cloud, local or microSD recording.
