Description

A finished camera has a body, and the body is usually what stops it fitting. The VIM-MINICAM5 separates the two: an 8MP Sony sensor on the end of a long flexible neck, with the electronics, the 5000mAh cell and the card slot in a module you can put somewhere else entirely.

It records 4K to a microSD card up to 128GB and runs about eight hours on a charge, or continuously on USB power. An external PIR sensor starts it on movement rather than on every change of light, and a 2.4GHz remote arms it without opening the housing. The WiFi is a direct hotspot from the camera itself, so live view works while you are within range of the unit rather than from another address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need WiFi at the site?

No. The camera makes its own hotspot and your phone joins the camera directly, so it works at a shed or a bach with no broadband. The trade off is that live view only reaches as far as the hotspot does. If you want to check in from another address, pick a model that joins your own router.

How long does it run on a charge?

About eight hours on the 5000mAh battery, and longer in PIR mode because it is idle between events. Left on USB power it runs continuously.

What starts the recording?

Either you do, with the remote, or the external PIR sensor does when it picks up body heat and movement in front of it.

What size card does it take?

microSD up to 128GB, which is not supplied. Loop recording overwrites the oldest files once the card is full.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Yes, in a place you own or control: your own home, your own garage or workshop, your own business premises. The Privacy Act 2020 expects you to be open about it, so tell the people who live or work in the space that a camera is running, and put a notice up in a business. Bathrooms, changing areas and bedrooms that are not yours are out, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video, so leave the microphone out of it unless you are part of the conversation.
