Description

The VIM-V89 is a pinhole module: a very small lens on a flexible cable, a 600mAh cell and a WiFi board, supplied with a set of button covers so the lens can be fitted flush into whatever housing you build for it.

It records at 4K, 2K or 1080p to a microSD card up to 128GB and streams live to the free Android and iOS app over your own router. Motion detection starts a clip and pushes an alert. The battery runs about three hours, so the supplied DC adapter is how most people use it, with a power bank in between for a site with no power point.

Features

Selectable resolution: Record at 4K, 2K or 1080p depending on how much detail and how much card space you want to spend.
Pinhole lens on a cable: The lens is tiny and on a flexible lead, so it can look through a small opening in a housing while the board sits behind it.
Live view and alerts: Streams to Android and iOS over your own WiFi and pushes a notification when it detects movement.
Button covers supplied: A set of button covers lets the lens sit flush in a panel or fitting you make.
Three power options: About three hours on the internal cell, days on a power bank, or continuous on the supplied DC adapter.
Local recording: Video goes to your own microSD card, not to a cloud account.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Cabinet or Housing in Your Own Home

The pinhole lens exists so a camera can look out of something too small to hold a camera body. A cabinet door, a shelf upright or a panel you have made.

Your Own Garage or Shed

Set motion detection, leave it on the DC adapter and let the alerts tell you when the door has been opened.

Your Own Workshop Bench

Continuous recording while you are working, at 1080p to keep the card going, and 4K for the times you need the detail.

A Property You Own and Leave Empty

A power bank plus motion detection covers a bach or a lockup for days at a time without mains power.

How it Works

Set it up: fit a microSD card, mount the lens using the supplied button covers and power the board from the adapter or a power bank.
Pair it: join it to your 2.4GHz WiFi with the app, choose 4K, 2K or 1080p and set motion or continuous recording.
Watch or review: watch live in the app, or take the card out and read it on a computer.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the internal battery last?

About three hours of continuous recording from the 600mAh cell. For a longer session use a power bank, and for a permanent installation use the supplied DC adapter.

Which resolution should I use?

1080p for anything you want to run for a long time on one card, and 4K when you need to read detail such as a face or a label. The camera will do either.

Does it send alerts to my phone?

Yes. With motion detection switched on, the app pushes a notification when the camera sees movement and starts a clip.

Can I watch live and record at the same time?

Yes. Live view over WiFi runs at the same time as the card is recording.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Yes, in a place you own or control: your own home, your own garage or workshop, your own business premises. The Privacy Act 2020 expects you to be open about it, so tell the people who live or work in the space, and put a notice up in a business. Bathrooms, changing areas and bedrooms that are not yours are out, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video, so leave it out unless you are part of the conversation.
