The VIM-V69 is a camera module rather than a camera: a small lens on a flexible cable, a body that holds the electronics and the battery, and nothing else to get in the way when you fit it into something you already own.

It streams up to 4K to the free app on Android or iOS and records 1920 x 1080p with audio to a microSD card. Six 940nm infrared LEDs let it record a dark room without adding any visible light to it. The internal 2000mAh cell gives about five hours, the supplied DC adapter runs it around the clock, and a power bank sits between the two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it really record in 4K?

No. 4K is the live view resolution in the app. Recording to the card is Full HD 1920 x 1080p, and the 12MP figure is for stills. We have written the specification the way the supplier states it rather than repeating the headline.

How does the night vision work?

Six 940nm infrared LEDs light the scene at a wavelength the sensor can see and the eye cannot, so the camera keeps recording in a dark room without adding light to it. It is not thermal imaging and it will not see through anything.

How long does the battery last?

About five hours of continuous recording on the internal cell. For anything longer, use the supplied DC adapter or a power bank.

What card size does it support?

microSD up to 128GB. The manufacturer has confirmed 128GB as the supported maximum, so ignore the 256GB figure that appears on some older data sheets.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Yes, in a place you own or control: your own home, your own shed or workshop, your own business premises. The Privacy Act 2020 expects you to be open about it, so tell the people who live or work in the space. Bathrooms, changing areas and bedrooms that are not yours are out, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video, so leave the microphone off unless you are part of the conversation.
