Description

The VIM-CAPCAM is a baseball cap with a 1080p camera set into the brim, which puts the lens at head height and pointing where you are looking without anything on your chest or in your hand.

It records 1920 x 1080 through a 5 megapixel sensor and a 70 degree pinhole lens, with audio and a time and date stamp, onto a microSD card up to 32GB. H.264 hardware compression keeps the files manageable, and the 320 mAh battery gives up to about two hours of continuous recording. The cap weighs 110 g, so it wears like any other cap.

Features

Full HD from the brim: Records 1920 x 1080 through a 5 megapixel sensor, with a time and date stamp on the footage for documentation.
70 degree pinhole lens: Set into the cap brim, which gives a natural head level viewpoint and keeps the lens itself hard to pick out.
Two hours on a charge: The 320 mAh Li-polymer cell gives up to about two hours of continuous recording, charged over USB 2.0.
Audio within about a metre: The built in microphone is effective at conversational range. Beyond that, treat the sound as context.
Three buttons, nothing to learn: Separate controls for power, video and photos, so operation stays reliable when you cannot look at what you are pressing.
microSD up to 32GB: H.264 hardware compression stretches what fits on the card. The card is not included.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Site visits and inspections

Walking a site with a clipboard in one hand and a torch in the other. The cap records at head height from the angle you are actually looking, with the time and date stamped on the footage, so the record matches your written notes without you stopping to photograph anything.

Customer facing and field work

Deliveries, callouts and jobs where an account of what happened is worth having afterwards. A cap is unremarkable on a work site in a way that a chest rig is not, and the two hour runtime covers a normal round of calls.

Documenting conditions outdoors

Property surveys, land and stock checks, and anything where you are moving through a place rather than standing still in it. At 110 g the cap wears normally, and footage goes onto an ordinary microSD card you read in any computer.

How it Works

Fit a card and charge: Insert a microSD card up to 32GB, which is not supplied, and charge the 320 mAh cell over USB 2.0.
Press to record: Power up and press the video button. The lens in the brim records 1080p with H.264 compression and a time and date stamp, for up to about two hours.
Offload over USB: Connect over USB 2.0 to copy the recordings, or take the card out and read it directly. The same connection charges the battery.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record on one charge?

Up to about two hours of continuous recording from the 320 mAh internal battery, depending on conditions.

Where is the lens and how much does it see?

The pinhole lens is set into the cap brim and gives a 70 degree view, which is close to a natural head level perspective rather than a wide fisheye.

What memory cards does it take?

A microSD card up to 32GB, which is not included. H.264 hardware compression keeps the file sizes down so a 32GB card goes further than the raw bitrate suggests.

Does it record audio as well as video?

Yes. The built in microphone captures audio effectively within about a metre.

How do I transfer files or charge it?

Both go over the USB 2.0 connection. Plug into a computer to copy recordings off, or leave it connected to charge the internal battery. You can also take the microSD card out and read it in any card reader.

What am I allowed to record in New Zealand?

Recording in a public place, where nobody has a reasonable expectation of privacy, is generally lawful, and that covers most site, street and outdoor documentation. Where privacy is expected the limits are firm: changing rooms, bathrooms and private homes are off limits without consent, and the Crimes Act 1961 treats intimate visual recording as a serious offence. Audio is treated more strictly than video: the Crimes Act 1961 limits recording conversations and the Privacy Commissioner regards audio as far more intrusive, so think about the conversations you capture. Private premises, workplaces and venues can also set stricter rules than the law requires. This is general information, not legal advice.
