Description

The VIM-BUTTONCAM3 is a 13 gram button camera with a 2.4GHz remote, which is the part that matters: you can start and stop it from up to four metres away without reaching for it.

It records Full HD 1920 x 1080p at 30fps in AVI through a 72 degree lens, with M-JPEG stills, to a microSD card up to 128GB with loop recording. The 250mAh cell gives about 90 minutes, and it runs continuously when plugged into 5V USB power.

Features

2.4GHz remote to 4m: Start and stop recording from across a room, without touching the camera.
13 grams: Light enough to sit on a garment without pulling at it.
128GB card support: Loop recording keeps the most recent footage without any file management.
1080p and stills: Full HD at 30fps in AVI, with an M-JPEG picture mode.
90 minutes or continuous: The 250mAh cell for a session, or plugged in for as long as you like.
Card reader and adapter supplied: A microSD card reader and a USB power adapter come in the box.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Recording Your Own Work

A walk through, an inspection or a job where you want a record of what you did, started with the remote as you begin.

An Incident You Are Part Of

Being present is what makes recording reasonable, and the remote means you can start it without a visible movement toward the camera.

Documenting a Property You Own

Record a site you own or manage hands free while you walk it, rather than describing it afterwards.

As a Fixed Camera on Your Own Premises

Plugged into the supplied adapter it runs continuously in a place you own, with the people who live or work there told about it.

How it Works

Charge and load: charge over mini USB and fit a microSD card up to 128GB.
Set the mode: mount the button on a garment or a panel using the supplied fittings.
Record and retrieve: start and stop with the 2.4GHz remote from up to four metres, then read the card with the supplied reader.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the remote actually for?

It lets you start and stop recording from up to four metres away, so you are not reaching for the camera to operate it. That is the practical difference between this and the other button cameras here.

How long does it record?

About 90 minutes on the 250mAh cell. Plugged into the supplied 5V adapter it records continuously.

What card does it take?

microSD up to 128GB, which is four times what most button cameras in this range support, with loop recording so it keeps going without being cleared.

Does it take photos as well?

Yes, in M-JPEG format, alongside the 1080p AVI video.

Does it record sound?

Yes. It offers video plus audio recording through a built-in microphone, so footage plays back with sound. Audio carries stricter rules in New Zealand than video: recording a private conversation you are not a party to is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961, so only record conversations you are part of.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Worn and used while you are present, yes. You are a party to what happens in front of you, and recording a conversation you are part of is lawful here, as is filming in a place you own or control. Used as a fixed camera, it needs to be in a place you own or control and the Privacy Act 2020 expects you to tell the people who live or work there. Bathrooms and changing areas are out entirely, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961.
