The VIM-BLOCK6 sits in a cup holder and looks like an air freshener. Sixteen ultrasonic sensors fire in a 360 degree pattern at 25kHz, so a microphone in the cabin picks up interference instead of speech. One button, no noise a person can hear, and a USB-C charge port. There is a compartment inside for aromatherapy balm if you want the disguise to be complete.

Charge it over USB-C, then drop it into a cup holder or a door pocket where nothing blocks the top of the unit.
Press the single button before the conversation starts. There is no audible tone, so nobody in the car knows it is running.
The sixteen emitters flood the cabin with 25kHz ultrasound. Microphones respond to it even though people cannot hear it, so what a recorder captures is noise rather than words.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the people in the car hear anything?

No. The output is at 25kHz, above the range of adult hearing. Some people, particularly children and some animals, are more sensitive to high frequencies and may notice something.

Does it stop a phone call as well as a recording?

It interferes with what the microphone picks up, so a live call carries the same interference a recording would. That applies to your own phone too, so switch it off when you want to be heard.

How big a car does it cover?

It is rated for a vehicle cabin, and coverage depends on the size of the vehicle and where the recording device is. A van or a large SUV is a bigger space than the unit was designed around.

How long does it run on a charge?

It draws 6W in use and charges at 5V 2A over USB-C, so it is designed to run from a car USB port for long trips rather than only on its own charge.

Can I leave it in the car in summer?

Rated from -20 to 45 degrees Celsius. A car parked in direct summer sun can exceed that, so take it inside on very hot days.

Is it legal to use one of these in New Zealand?

You can protect your own conversations in a space you control, and that is what these are made for. Two things to keep in mind. This is an ultrasonic device: it emits sound above the range of human hearing, not radio signals, so it is not a radio jammer, and radio frequency jamming equipment is regulated separately under the Radiocommunications Act 1989. And it works on every microphone in range, including ones you may be relying on, so switch it off before a call you want recorded and never use it to interfere with a recording someone is lawfully entitled to make.
