Description

The VIM-OBD2 4G GPS tracker plugs straight into a vehicle OBD2 port, so it takes power and installs in seconds. It gives live positioning with A-GPS assistance, remote listening, and alerts for motion, geo-fence events, power cut, high temperature and low backup battery. Watch one vehicle or a fleet from the free iPhone and Android app or the web portal, with no ongoing subscription. A micro SIM keeps data flowing on the main networks, and a sleep mode cuts consumption while the vehicle is idle.

Features

  • Plug-and-play install: OBD2 direct connection for quick setup and continuous power, no wiring required.
  • Live tracking & audio: Real-time location plus remote listening from your mobile phone for added context.
  • Smart alerts: SMS/app notifications for geo-fence breaches, vibration/motion detection, power-cut and high-temperature events.
  • Efficient power use: Sleep mode limits draw during inactivity; backup battery maintains reporting on power loss.
  • Multi-platform, no fees: Free iOS/Android app and web access with multi-device support under one account.
  • Backup battery alerts: Low backup battery warning helps prevent downtime and missed reports.

Applications

Where It Fits Best

Use the VIM-OBD2 to safeguard personal cars, supervise teen or staff driving, and streamline small fleet oversight. Set boundaries for routes, receive alerts on misuse or tampering, and review movements without monthly charges.

SIM Card Support:

  • Spark
  • One NZ
  • 2degrees
  • (Any Other SIM Cards)

How it Works

  1. Plug it into the OBD2 port: Fit a micro SIM and push the unit into the diagnostic port. It draws 12 to 24V from the port, so there is no wiring at all.
  2. Register the device: Add it in the free iPhone or Android app or the web portal, then set who receives alerts. One account holds several vehicles.
  3. Track and set alerts: A-GPS assistance shortens the first fix and position reports over 4G to about 10 metres. Alerts cover motion, geo-fence events, power cut, high temperature and low backup battery, and remote listening is available on request.

A sleep mode drops the unit to about 30mA standby while the vehicle is idle, and the 130mAh backup cell covers a short gap if the plug is pulled.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is it to install?

It plugs into the OBD2 port and draws 12 to 24V from it. There is no wiring and nothing permanent, which suits a leased or shared vehicle.

How accurate is the position?

About 10 metres depending on where the vehicle is. A-GPS assistance shortens the time to the first fix after the unit wakes.

What alerts does it send?

Motion, geo-fence entry and exit, power cut, high temperature and low backup battery, delivered to the app or by SMS.

What happens if it is unplugged?

The 130mAh backup cell holds the unit up long enough to raise a power-cut alert before it goes quiet.

Is there a subscription?

No. The app and the web portal are free to use. The only running cost is the data plan on the micro SIM you fit.

Is it legal to use the live listening feature?

Audio is treated differently from location in New Zealand law, and more strictly. Listening to a conversation you are part of, or recording in your own vehicle where the people in it have been told, is generally lawful. Intercepting a private conversation you are not part of, using a device like this one, is an offence under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961 and carries real penalties. If you record for a business or at work, the Privacy Act 2020 applies as well. Use the tracking freely on your own assets and take advice before you use the microphone on anyone else. This is general information rather than legal advice.
