Description

Bottom structure below 30 metres sits past the reach of a cabled drop camera, which is where most fish cameras stop being useful.

This castable underwater fishing camera records 1080p to internal storage as deep as 200 metres, then syncs the footage to your phone once you retrieve it. A Sony STARVIS low light sensor holds detail in the dim water where deep structure actually sits, and the fin weighted body casts on your own mainline, so there is no cable, no reel and no monitor to rig on the gunwale. Motion sensing starts recording when something enters frame, so the battery goes on fish rather than empty water.

Features

  • Records the drop, review it on deck: Captures 1080p to 16 GB of built in storage as deep as 200 metres. On a deep drop the footage is held on the camera and syncs to your phone once you retrieve it above water.
  • No cable, no reel, no monitor: The fin weighted 85 g body casts on your own mainline and sinks to structure a 30 metre cable rig cannot reach. Nothing to hand wind, nothing to clamp to the gunwale.
  • Sony STARVIS sensor holds deep detail: An f/2.0 Sony STARVIS sensor running ISO 100 to 6400 keeps structure and bait readable in the dim water below the thermocline, where a basic sensor smears the image into noise.
  • 136 degrees across the water column: The ultra wide lens frames the column around the camera on the way down, so one drop reads the whole mark instead of a narrow forward cone.
  • Doubles as a lure, and records only when it matters: The fin shaped body and a green LED draw fish toward the lens rather than spooking them, and motion sensing starts recording when something enters frame, so the roughly two hour battery is spent on fish instead of empty water.
  • Steady in the current, float it or sink it: Moulded fins hold the lens forward and stop the body spinning as the drift swings your line. Clip on the buoyancy ring to float it lens down for surface work, or drop it bare to sink nose first to structure.
  • Live view at the surface, recording at depth: In its surface float the unit faces down and sends a live view to the free iOS and Android app within about 50 m. Once it leaves the float and descends, WiFi cannot travel through water, so it records internally and you replay, clip and share after retrieval.
  • Sound with the vision, and a dock to charge on: A built in microphone captures audio alongside the video, though the sealed pressure housing muffles it, so treat the sound as context rather than clean audio. The camera sits on a wireless dock between sessions, and the 16 GB is built in and non removable, so you clear it to your phone rather than swapping a card.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Structure past cable depth

An offshore pinnacle marks on the sounder at 90 metres, well beyond any drop camera cable. Cast the camera on your mainline and let it sink to the mark. Retrieve it, open the clip on deck, and confirm whether the structure holds bait before you commit a drift to it.

Building a mark log across a season

Every productive reef, wreck and ledge gets a recorded drop. Back at the ramp, keep the clips that show fish and file them against the GPS marks. Over a season that becomes a visual library of which structure holds through which conditions, rather than a list of coordinates you have to remember the context for.

Salt water and snag insurance

Rig the camera on a swivel with a leader lighter than your mainline, so a fouled drop breaks the leader and the camera comes home rather than staying on the reef. After a saltwater session, rinse the housing in fresh water to clear salt from the seal before it dries.

How it Works

  1. Rig: Attach the camera to your mainline through a swivel. The fin weighted body sits lens forward and sinks nose down.
  2. Cast and drop: Cast to the mark or drop straight over structure. Motion sensing starts recording 1080p to the internal 16 GB as it descends, down to 200 metres.
  3. Retrieve and review: Reel it in. Above water the camera connects to the free app over WiFi, and you replay, clip and export the drop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can it go?

It is rated to 200 metres on an IPX8 housing. Because it casts on your line instead of hanging off a fixed cable, the depth limit is how far it sinks rather than how much spool you have, so it reaches offshore structure a 30 metre drop camera cannot.

Does it record, or only stream?

It records. Every drop is written as 1080p to 16 GB of built in storage, and the clips sync to your phone over WiFi once the camera surfaces. That is the difference between this and a cabled fish camera, which streams to a monitor and saves nothing.

Can I watch it live on my phone?

Only when it is deployed in its surface float, facing down and sending a live view over WiFi within about 50 metres. Once it leaves the float and sinks, the water column blocks the signal, so it records internally and you review after retrieval. The deep footage is recorded, not streamed.

Will it scare the fish?

Generally no. The fin shaped body and green LED work as an attractant, drawing fish toward the lens rather than pushing them off the mark. In clear water you often see fish move in to inspect the camera, which is exactly the footage you want.

How long does a charge last?

Up to 138 minutes offline, or about 110 with WiFi running, and it takes 3.5 hours on the wireless dock. Motion sensing helps that go further, because the camera idles when nothing is in frame rather than filling the card with empty water.

Is it legal to use in New Zealand?

Yes, for recreational and commercial fishing across New Zealand waterways. The limits are place based: marine parks, sanctuary zones and some protected reef areas restrict camera deployment or unattended gear, so check the specific zone before you launch. The camera is rated for fishing use and not for SCUBA, hull inspection or marine survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
