Tournament prep day. The sounder marks structure at 15 metres, but a sonar trace on its own will not tell you whether it holds bait, kelp cover or open sand.

This wide angle underwater fishing camera drops a 220 degree fisheye to 30 metres on a 30 kg rated cable, with live video streaming to a 5 inch IPS monitor you can clamp to the rod handle. The 9 hour battery covers a full charter day, and 12 IR LEDs keep you scouting after the late afternoon glare drops. Live view only: there is no recording and no card slot, so this is a tool for deciding where to fish rather than for keeping footage.

See forward and down in one frame: The 220 degree fisheye captures the full water column ahead of the camera rather than a narrow forward window, which is what makes it useful for surveying kelp beds or reading how fish sit on structure.

Real-World Scenarios

Charter pre-fishing scout

Clients are booked for 7am, so you are on the water at half past five confirming last week's productive reef shoulder still holds bait. Drop the Fish Shell at three waypoints in 8 to 18 metres. The 220 degree lens shows pilchard schools in two of them and empty kelp in the third, and the morning plan changes before anyone else is aboard.

Tournament pre-fishing day

The day before the tournament you map kelp beds along the southern wall. Switch between the Floater Cam Shell above the canopy and the Fish Shell down through the gaps to chart cover density and where the larger fish are sitting, then mark the waypoints. The work does not need repeating in the morning.

Kayak and skiff inshore work

Small craft fishing 5 to 15 metres inshore. Clamp the Rod Bracket onto the rod butt, drop the Fish Shell over the side, and check structure without carrying a heavy sonar transducer. The 0.87 kg packed weight is the number that matters when you are paddling in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can it go?

30 metres, on the supplied cable, with an IP68 rating that handles full submersion within that depth. The limit is the cable length rather than the housing, so if your work is regularly deeper than 30 metres this is the wrong tool and a castable recording camera is the right one.

Can you use it at night?

Yes. The 12 IR LEDs around the lens give white light illumination for low light and night work, reaching 2 to 3 metres ahead of the lens in clear water. In turbid or murky water, lower the intensity to reduce backscatter rather than turning it up.

Does this camera record video?

No. Live video streams to the 5 inch monitor only. There is no SD card slot and no internal storage. To document a session, point a phone camera at the monitor or feed the AV out into an external recorder.

Will it work in murky water?

Within limits. The 12 IR LEDs cut through algae bloom and stirred sediment to roughly 1 to 2 metres of usable visibility. Below a metre of visibility, in heavy estuarine mud or post storm runoff, you are at the edge of what the lens resolves.

Can I use it on a commercial charter in New Zealand?

Yes. Underwater fishing cameras are lawful for recreational and commercial fishing in New Zealand public waterways. The limits are place based: marine reserves, sanctuary zones and some protected areas restrict camera deployment, particularly for unattended gear, so check the zone before you launch. Because the unit does not record video or audio, the privacy questions that attach to recording devices do not arise.
