Description

Bright daylight turns a windscreen into a mirror. The dashboard, the demister vents and anything pale sitting on the dash bounce back into the road lens, and the recording comes back washed out across the part of the frame that carries the evidence.

This circular polarising filter seats over the front road lens of the radar dash cam range and strips that reflected layer out before it reaches the sensor. A single screw locks it to the lens barrel, so there is nothing stuck to the glass and nothing to work loose.

Features

  • Fastens down and stays there: The 35mm ring seats over the 25mm front lens and a single small screw locks it against the barrel. Once it is down it holds both its position and its angle, through every speed bump and every hot afternoon.
  • Nothing stuck to the glass: No adhesive pad ageing in a hot car, no sprung clip losing tension. A dash cam vibrates against the windscreen every minute the engine runs, and a tightened fitting is the honest answer to that.
  • Filters the reflection, not the road: Light bouncing off the inside of the windscreen arrives polarised. The filter blocks that plane and passes the rest, so the traffic, the lane markings and the plate ahead stay in the frame.
  • Four cameras, and no others: VIM-LUXXRD, VIM-LUXXRDR, VIM-LUXXRD2 and VIM-LUXXRD2R take it. Nothing else does, there is no adaptor, and no universal version exists. Check the model on the unit before ordering.
  • Front channel only: The cabin lenses and the rear-window camera stay unfiltered. Both face away from the windscreen, where the reflection this solves does not occur.
  • A daylight-first fitting: No power lead, no menu entry, no firmware, so the camera does not know it is there. What it notices is light. Polarising trims street-light reflection after dark as well, but it trims total light too, so shadow detail drops.

Applications

Reading a plate in full sun

Midday light off a pale dashboard lays a bright wash across the lower half of the frame, which is exactly where the car in front sits at a stop. With the filter on the lens that wash drops away and the plate resolves. That is the difference between footage that supports a claim and footage that shows a shape.

A vehicle that works all day

Rideshare, courier and taxi vehicles spend the whole daylight span pointed at glare, so the reflection is constant rather than occasional. Fit the filter once at the start and it stays where it was put, through every speed bump and every hot afternoon in a car park.

How it Works

  1. Seat it: Place the filter over the front road lens and line it up against the surround.
  2. Fasten it: A mini screwdriver takes the screw down until the ring sits without play. The collar is marked Turn, Hold, Release to show the direction it seats.
  3. Drive: The camera behaves exactly as before. Polarised glare off the windscreen is blocked at the lens rather than corrected afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a CPL filter necessary for a dash cam?

Not for every vehicle. A dark dashboard under a steeply raked screen reflects very little. A pale dash, a light-coloured trim strip, or anything left sitting on top of it will show up in the footage, and that is the case this filter solves.

Should I use a dash cam CPL filter at night?

It does two things after dark. It cuts polarised glare from street lights reflecting off the windscreen, which helps, and it cuts total light reaching the sensor, which costs shadow detail. On a vehicle working daylight hours that trade favours the filter. On a vehicle that mostly drives at night, weigh it first.

Which cameras does it fit?

Four: VIM-LUXXRD, VIM-LUXXRDR, VIM-LUXXRD2 and VIM-LUXXRD2R. The filter is cut to the front road lens housing on those units and seats flush against it. It is not a universal filter and will not hold position on a different camera body.

Does it cover the cabin and rear cameras?

No. One filter ships and it covers the forward road channel. The two cabin lenses and the rear-window camera record unfiltered, which is correct: they point into the car and out the back, away from the windscreen surface that creates the reflection.

Does the filter affect the radar parking mode?

No. The radar sits in the camera body and senses movement around the parked vehicle, not through the lens. The filter sits on the lens only, so parking detection, the recording trigger and the low-voltage cut-off all behave exactly as they did before.

Is it legal to use a dash cam with a filter fitted in New Zealand?

Yes. Dash cams are lawful to use throughout New Zealand and a lens filter changes nothing about that. The usual rules still apply: mount the camera where it does not block the driver's view of the road, and if you record audio inside the cabin, the Crimes Act 1961 and the Privacy Act 2020 apply to recording other people. This is general product information, not legal advice.
