Description

Parking mode needs permanent power, and the usual way to get it is a fuse tap. In a leased, financed or fleet vehicle that means splicing a circuit somebody has to unpick at handover.

This 50cm lead takes power from the OBD2 port instead, and joins the hardwire kit that ships with the camera. The install is two connectors and a cut-off setting, and a light on the plug shows when the vehicle battery is running low.

Features

  • Fits four radar dash cams: VIM-LUXXRD, VIM-LUXXRDR, VIM-LUXXRD2 and VIM-LUXXRD2R take this lead. Nothing else does, and no adaptor exists, so check the model before ordering.
  • Low voltage light on the plug: The indicator on the connector face shows when the vehicle battery is dropping, so a driver reads it on the way past.
  • Plugs into the OBD2 port: The socket sits on the driver's side under the dash, usually near the steering column. Exactly where varies by make.
  • Joins the hardwire kit: Both ends line up, so this lead replaces the fuse-tap leg of the kit that came with the camera and leaves the rest of the run exactly as it was.
  • Cut-off stays at 11.8, 12.0 or 12.2V: Because the kit stays in the circuit, its three-position voltage cut-off keeps working. A one-piece OBD lead fixes that threshold for you.
  • 50cm lead: Enough to run from the OBD2 socket to the join, not the whole way to the windscreen. The kit's cable covers the rest.
  • Unplugs at handover: A tapped fuse circuit has to be unpicked when a leased vehicle goes back. This comes out in one movement and leaves the loom as it was.

Applications

Leased and company vehicles

A leased or financed car goes back at the end of term, and anything spliced into the loom is a conversation at handover. This lead unplugs and the kit comes down with the camera. What the next driver inherits is a vehicle with nothing done to it.

Fitting a small fleet

Four vans booked in with an auto electrician is most of a day and a bill per vehicle. Plugged into the diagnostic socket, each install is two connectors and a cut-off setting. The van that sits over a long weekend is the one that will not turn over on Tuesday, which is what the cut-off is for.

How it Works

  1. Join: Push the barrel end of this lead onto the matching end of the hardwire kit until it seats.
  2. Plug in: Push the OBD2 connector into the diagnostic socket, driver's side, under the dash.
  3. Set the cut-off: Choose 11.8, 12.0 or 12.2V on the kit's inline box. The camera runs on the OBD2 feed from then on.

Specifications

  • Model: VIM-OBDASH
  • Type: OBD2 power lead for a dash camera
  • Fits: VIM-LUXXRD, VIM-LUXXRDR, VIM-LUXXRD2 and VIM-LUXXRD2R
  • Vehicle end: OBD-II diagnostic connector
  • Camera end: Barrel plug that mates with the hardwire kit that ships with the camera
  • Cable length: 50cm
  • Indicator: Low voltage warning light on the connector face
  • Voltage cut-off: Not in this lead. The hardwire kit it joins keeps its 11.8, 12.0 and 12.2V selector
  • Power required: None of its own. It carries the vehicle supply through to the kit

Frequently Asked Questions

OBD or hardwire for a dash cam?

Hardwiring gives the tidiest result and needs a fuse tap. This lead gives the same permanent supply from the diagnostic socket, with nothing spliced. On a leased or fleet vehicle the plug-in route wins, because the whole install comes back out in one movement at handover.

Does a dash cam drain the car battery?

It can, which is why parking mode runs behind a voltage cut-off. The kit that came with your camera carries that cut-off and this lead keeps it in the circuit, so the camera stops before the battery falls too low to crank the engine.

Which cameras does this lead fit?

Four: VIM-LUXXRD, VIM-LUXXRDR, VIM-LUXXRD2 and VIM-LUXXRD2R. The barrel end is cut to the hardwire kit those four ship with, so the two connectors seat together. It is not a universal lead and there is no adaptor for another camera body, so check the model on the unit.

Can I use the OBD port for a dash cam in any car?

The socket itself is standard on modern vehicles, but where it sits is not. Most are on the driver's side under the dash near the steering column, some behind a trim panel. Find yours first, because a 50cm lead has to reach the join.

Does the low voltage light switch the camera off?

No. The light on the connector reports what the supply is doing and nothing more. Switching off is the job of the cut-off in the hardwire kit, which you set to 11.8, 12.0 or 12.2 volts. The light tells you; the kit acts.

Is it legal to power a dash cam from the OBD2 port in New Zealand?

Yes. Plugging an accessory into the diagnostic socket is lawful and nothing in the vehicle is modified, which is the point of it for a leased or company car. Dash cams themselves are lawful to use throughout New Zealand; mount the camera where it does not block the driver's view, and if you record audio inside the cabin, the Crimes Act 1961 and the Privacy Act 2020 apply to recording other people. This is general product information, not legal advice.
