Description

The LawMate PV-RC400UW is the top of the key fob range: an 8MP progressive CMOS sensor, a 2.9 Lux low light rating, frame rates up to 120fps and built-in WiFi for live view and remote start from a phone.

It is a device you carry, so what matters is that you know what it is doing without looking at it. Vibration tells you when it powers on, when it starts recording and when the battery is low. Recording runs 110 minutes with WiFi off, 75 with it on, to a 128GB card supplied in the box.

Features

8MP progressive CMOS sensor: A half inch class sensor rated at 2.9 Lux, which is what separates this fob from the cheaper ones in low light.
Frame rates to 120fps: 120, 60, 30 and 25fps, so fast movement can be recorded and reviewed slowly.
WiFi live view and remote start: Watch and start or stop recording from an Android or iOS phone.
Vibration feedback: The fob buzzes on power, on recording and on low battery, so you know its state without looking.
128GB card supplied: Unusually, the card comes in the box rather than as an accessory.
Video with audio and a time stamp: MOV files with sound and a date and time overlay.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Recording Your Own Work

A trade visit, an inspection or a job where you want a record of what you did and the condition of what you found. You are there, and it is your own work being recorded.

An Incident You Are Part Of

If something happens to you, a recording you made while present is evidence. Being a party to it is what makes it reasonable.

Documenting a Property You Own

Walk a site you own or manage and record its state, rather than trying to describe it later from memory.

Your Own Vehicle

It is a key fob, so it is already in the car. Tell your passengers before they get in.

How it Works

Charge and load: charge the fob, put the supplied 128GB card in and switch it on. It vibrates to confirm.
Start recording: press to record, or connect over WiFi and start it from your phone with live view on screen.
Retrieve the files: copy the MOV files off over the mini USB connection.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What resolution does it record at?

In 4K, at 3840 x 2160 and 25 or 30fps. The manufacturer has confirmed the full set: 4K at 25 or 30fps for detail, 1080p at 30, 60 or 120fps to balance quality against card space, and 720p at 60 or 120fps for the longest sessions. The 2592 x 1944 figure elsewhere in the specification is the sensor, not the video.

How long does it record?

110 minutes with WiFi off and 75 minutes with WiFi on, from the 660mAh cell. WiFi is the expensive part, so switch it off when you only need the recording.

How do I know it is running?

It vibrates. Power on and off, start of recording and low battery each have their own alert, so you do not need to look at it.

Is a card included?

Yes, a 128GB microSD card comes in the box, which is unusual in this range and worth the difference on its own.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Carried and used while you are present, yes. You are a party to what happens in front of you, and recording a conversation you are part of is lawful here, as is filming in a place you own or control. What you cannot do is leave it recording a conversation you are not part of, use it in a bathroom, changing area or anywhere else with a reasonable expectation of privacy, or record intimate footage, which is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. If you leave it somewhere as a fixed camera, the Privacy Act 2020 expects you to tell the people who live or work there.
