Description

The VIM-CARKEY5 is a key fob that records video and sound at the press of one button. There is no app, no menu and nothing to set up, which is the whole argument for it: you press it and it is running.

It records Full HD 1920 x 1080p with audio through a 75 degree lens, runs up to 90 minutes on its 340mAh cell, and records while charging. Files go to a microSD card up to 32GB with a time and date stamp. At 30g it does not change the weight of a keyring.

Features

One button: Press to start, press to stop. Nothing to configure and nothing to remember.
1080p with audio: Full HD video and sound recorded together, so an interaction has its context.
Ninety minutes per charge: Continuous video and audio from the 340mAh cell, and it records while charging.
Time and date stamped: Every file carries the stamp, which is what makes a set of clips usable later.
30g: Light enough that it stays on your keys rather than in a drawer.
Local storage: microSD up to 32GB, with nothing leaving the device.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Recording Your Own Work

A site visit, a delivery or a job where you want a record of what you did and what you found. You are there, and it is your own work.

An Incident You Are Part Of

Something happening to you is something you are entitled to record. Being present is what makes it reasonable.

Documenting a Property You Own

Walk through a place you own or manage and record its condition rather than describing it afterwards.

Your Own Vehicle

It is a key fob, so it lives in the car anyway. Tell your passengers before they get in.

How it Works

Charge and load: charge the fob and fit a microSD card up to 32GB.
Start recording: press the single button to start recording video with audio, and press again to stop.
Retrieve the files: connect over USB to copy the time stamped files onto a computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record for?

Ninety minutes of video with audio on a full charge. It also records while charging, so a USB power bank in a pocket extends that as far as you need.

What card does it take?

microSD up to 32GB, which is not supplied. That is a smaller limit than most of the range, so plan around 90 minute sessions rather than days of footage.

Is there an app or live view?

No. This model is deliberately simple: one button, one card, no network. If you want live view on a phone, choose a WiFi model instead.

How wide does it see?

75 degrees, which suits what is directly in front of you rather than a whole room.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Carried and used while you are present, yes. You are a party to what happens in front of you, and recording a conversation you are part of is lawful here, as is filming in a place you own or control. What you cannot do is leave it recording a conversation you are not part of, use it in a bathroom or changing area, or record intimate footage, which is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. In a vehicle, tell your passengers before they get in.
