Description

A keyring sized recorder, model VIM-KEY1080, that records 1080p video with audio to a microSD card. There is no app, no WiFi and no account: one button starts and stops it, and the files come off the card or straight over USB-C.

It runs about two hours on the internal 300mAh cell and will record continuously while plugged in, so it works both as something you carry and as a small fixed camera in a room of your own. A 940nm infrared emitter covers close range work in the dark, out to about a metre.

What am I allowed to record with this?

You can record a space you own or control and a conversation you are part of. Your own vehicle, your own office, your own storeroom, a meeting you are sitting in: all of that is ordinary lawful use and it is what this is sold for. The limits are the ones worth reading twice. Under the Privacy Act 2020 people need to be told when a space is recorded, so put notice up anywhere others use. Bathrooms and changing areas are off limits and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is stricter than video: recording a private conversation you are not a party to is a criminal offence. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do I start recording?

Put a microSD card in, hold the power button for two seconds and it powers up and starts recording. A single press stops it and returns it to standby.

Does it need WiFi or a phone?

No. It is entirely self contained, which makes it reliable in places with no signal. The trade-off is that there is no live view: you watch the footage afterwards.

How long does the battery last, and can it run all day?

120 to 130 minutes of continuous recording on a full charge. Left plugged into USB power it records around the clock without a battery limit.

How do I get the video off it?

Either connect it to a computer with the USB-C cable, or take the microSD card out and use the supplied reader.
