Description

A recorder in a keyring fob, so it lives on the keys you are carrying anyway rather than in a bag you have to remember. Voice activated, with 8GB holding up to about 96 hours of audio.

Up to 18 hours of continuous recording per charge, with a recharge of about 90 minutes. Pickup runs to about 10 metres and every file carries a date and time stamp.

Features

  • It lives on your keys: A keyring fob, so the recorder is with you because your keys are, rather than because you remembered to pack it.
  • Voice activated: It starts when there is sound within about 10 metres and idles otherwise, which is what makes 18 hours of runtime cover far more than 18 hours of use.
  • 8GB, up to 96 hours: Internal memory holding around 96 hours of audio, with nothing to insert.
  • Ninety minute charge: A short charge for up to 18 hours of continuous recording.
  • Date and time stamped: Each file is stamped as it is recorded, so a set of them reads as a record rather than a pile of clips.
  • Pickup to about 10 metres: Enough for a meeting room, a vehicle cab or a counter.

Applications

Where It Works Best

Designed for low-profile note taking and documentation, the VIM-VR09 suits meetings, lectures, and discreet evidence gathering where a keyring will not attract attention.

How it Works

  1. Charge it: About 90 minutes on the charger gives up to 18 hours of continuous recording, and considerably longer in ordinary voice activated use.
  2. Record: Voice activation starts it when there is sound within about 10 metres, so a charge is spent on speech rather than on an empty room.
  3. Retrieve the files: Connect it to a computer and copy the recordings off. Each one carries a date and time stamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it run on a charge?

Up to 18 hours of continuous recording, and considerably longer in ordinary voice activated use because it idles between sounds. A recharge takes about 90 minutes.

How much audio does it hold?

The 8GB of internal memory stores up to about 96 hours of recordings.

What recording distance is practical?

The built in microphone picks up to about 10 metres in a reasonably quiet room. Background noise, hard surfaces and distance all reduce that, so put it as close to the conversation as you sensibly can.

Does voice activation miss the start of a sentence?

There is a short delay while it wakes, so the first word or two can be clipped. If the opening of a conversation matters, start it manually and let it run.

How do I get the recordings off?

Connect it to a computer and copy the files. Each one carries a date and time stamp.

Is it legal to record audio in New Zealand?

Recording a conversation you are taking part in is generally lawful in New Zealand. That covers the ordinary reasons for buying a recorder: your own meetings, your own interviews, a call you are on, dictation, and keeping a record of something that was said to you. Telling the other people is good practice, and it is what makes a recording useful later rather than contentious.

The limit is conversations you are not part of. Recording or listening to a private communication you are not a party to is interception under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961, and it is an offence. If you record for a business or at work, the Privacy Act 2020 applies as well. Do not use this to record other people's private conversations. This is general information, not legal advice.
