Description

The VIM-PENCAML2K is a working pen with a camera behind a cover in the clip, for recording where a raised phone would change what happens in the room.

It records 2048 x 1152 video at 30fps with audio, takes 3840 x 2160 stills, and writes to a microSD card up to 512GB. One button controls it, a small status LED tells you what it is doing, and the 440mAh battery gives up to 95 minutes of continuous capture. A 60 degree horizontal field and a 1 to 3 metre focal range are built for a table, a desk and the documents on it rather than wide room coverage.

Features

A pen that writes: It functions as an ordinary pen, so it belongs in a pocket, on a desk or in a pen cup without anyone thinking about it. The lens sits behind a cover.
2K video, 4K stills: Records 2048 x 1152 video at 30fps and takes 3840 x 2160 photographs, which is enough resolution to read a document on a table rather than just see that one is there.
Audio with the video: A built in microphone records sound alongside the picture, and a small status LED confirms recording, charging or standby.
One button, plug and play: A single control starts and stops capture. Connect over USB and it mounts as a drive on Windows or macOS with no software to install.
microSD up to 512GB: Storage is on a card rather than fixed, so capacity is yours to choose and archiving is a card swap. The card is not included.
95 minutes on a charge: The 440mAh lithium polymer cell gives up to 95 minutes of continuous capture, in a body 15 cm long, 1.4 cm across and 40 g on the desk.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Meetings and interviews

A pen on a table is the least remarkable object in the room. The 60 degree horizontal field and a focal range of 1 to 3 metres are built for exactly this distance: the people and documents across the table, rather than the whole room. 95 minutes covers most meetings end to end.

Documents and detail

Photo mode at 3840 x 2160 is the reason to reach for this over a body worn camera. Held at reading distance it captures a page, a serial number or a label clearly enough to be useful afterwards, without the shutter sound and raised phone that change the room.

Keeping a record of an incident

Where something is happening repeatedly and nobody believes the account of it, a contemporaneous recording with audio is a different kind of evidence from a description written afterwards. Understand the rules that apply to you first: the FAQ below covers what New Zealand law allows.

How it Works

Fit a card and charge: Insert a microSD card, up to 512GB and not supplied, and charge the 440mAh cell at DC 5V over the USB cable.
Press once to record: One press starts 2K video with audio, encoded H.264 to MP4. The status LED confirms it. Switch to photo mode for a 3840 x 2160 still.
Plug it into a computer: Over USB the pen mounts as a drive on Windows or macOS. Copy the files across. There is nothing to install and no app to sign into.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the video 4K?

No, and it is worth being precise about this. Video records at 2048 x 1152, which is 2K. The 4K figure, 3840 x 2160, is the still photograph resolution. Both are on the specification list, and the photo mode is genuinely the sharper of the two if what you need is a document or a label.

How long can it record on one charge?

Up to 95 minutes of continuous recording, from the 440mAh battery, at 2K.

What size microSD card does it take?

Up to 512GB, which is far more than the battery can fill in one sitting, so the card size is about how many sessions you keep before offloading rather than how long you can record. The card is not included.

How close does it need to be?

The lens is optimised for 1 to 3 metres with a 60 degree horizontal field, so it suits a table, a desk or a face to face conversation. It is not a room coverage camera and it will not resolve detail across a hall.

How do I get the files onto a computer?

Connect the USB cable and the pen appears as a drive on Windows or macOS. Copy the MP4 files across. No software, no drivers.

What am I allowed to record in New Zealand?

You can record in a public place, and you can record a conversation you are yourself part of, which covers most of what people buy a pen camera for. The limits are real. Recording a private conversation you are not part of is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Places where people reasonably expect privacy, changing rooms, bathrooms and private homes, are off limits without consent, and intimate visual recording is a serious offence. If you record for a business or organisation, the Privacy Act 2020 applies to how the footage is held and used, and workplaces, schools and venues can set stricter rules than the law does. This is general information, not legal advice.
