Description

The VIM-PENCAMLW is a working pen with a Full HD camera in it, built around one number: two to three hours of continuous recording, where most pen cameras stop somewhere around eighty minutes.

It records 1920 x 1080 video with audio to MOV, onto 32GB of built in memory with no card to fit or lose. One button handles continuous or manual recording, there is a photo mode for stills, and it mounts as an ordinary drive over USB 2.0 on Windows or macOS with nothing to install. Two spare ink cartridges are in the box, so it keeps writing as well as recording. 152 x 13 mm, 50 g.

Features

Two to three hours on a charge: The 380mAh cell gives a long continuous session, which is what separates this pen from the ones that stop at 80 minutes.
Full HD video with audio: Records 1920 x 1080 to MOV with sound from the built in microphone, so playback stays synchronised.
32GB built in: Storage is internal, so there is no card to buy, fit or lose, and nothing that can fall out.
A working pen with spares: Two spare ink cartridges are in the box, so it can be doing the ordinary job of a pen the whole time.
One button, two modes: A single control handles continuous recording or manual start and stop, with a photo mode for stills.
Plug and play over USB: Connects over USB 2.0 with a Type-C converter and mounts as a drive on Windows or macOS. No software to install. 152 x 13 mm, 50 g.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Long sessions

Meetings, lectures and hearings that run past the point where most pen cameras give up. Two to three hours of continuous recording covers a full session end to end, and the spare ink cartridges mean it can be taking written notes at the same time.

Field documentation

Site walks, callouts and delivery rounds where a record of what happened is worth having and a raised phone is not practical. 32GB of internal memory holds a long day without anything to swap out.

A record of a conversation you were in

A recording made at the time is much harder to dispute than a note written afterwards. Check what applies to you first: the FAQ below covers what New Zealand law allows.

How it Works

Charge over USB: The 380mAh lithium ion cell charges from a USB port using the supplied Type-C converter. There is no card to fit, since the 32GB is built in.
Press once to record: One button starts 1080p video with audio to MOV, continuously for up to three hours or under manual start and stop. A separate mode takes stills.
Copy the files off: Plug into a computer over USB 2.0 and the internal storage mounts as a drive on Windows or macOS. Drag the MOV files across.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record on one charge?

Two to three hours of continuous recording from the 380mAh battery, depending on use and temperature.

Does it take a memory card?

No. The 32GB is built into the pen, so there is no card slot and nothing extra to buy. Files come off over USB 2.0.

How do I transfer files to my computer?

Connect over USB 2.0, using the supplied Type-C converter if your machine needs it, and copy the MOV files off. It works on Windows and macOS without drivers.

Does it record audio as well as video?

Yes. A built in microphone captures audio saved with the 1080p video, so playback is synchronised.

Can I write with it while it records?

Yes. It is a working pen and two spare ink cartridges are in the box.

What am I allowed to record in New Zealand?

You can record in a public place, and you can record a conversation you are yourself part of, which covers most ordinary use. The limits matter. Recording a private conversation you are not part of is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Places where people reasonably expect privacy, such as changing rooms, bathrooms and private homes, are off limits without consent, and intimate visual recording is a serious offence. The Privacy Act 2020 governs how you hold and use the recording afterwards, and workplaces, schools and venues can set stricter rules than the law requires. This is general information, not legal advice.
