Description

The VIM-P02 is a working pen with a Full HD camera behind a lens cover, for interviews, meetings and field documentation where holding up a phone would change what happens next.

It records 1920 x 1080 at 30fps with audio, takes stills on demand, and saves everything to 16GB of built in memory, which is roughly five hours of footage. One touch starts it. Over USB it mounts as an ordinary flash drive on Windows, Linux or macOS with no drivers to install, and charges from the same port. Up to 80 minutes of recording per charge, 50 g in a shirt pocket.

Features

Full HD video with audio: Records 1920 x 1080 at 30fps with sound, so a meeting or an event plays back as one synchronised clip rather than two files to line up.
Still photos on demand: Switch to picture mode for a quick snapshot when a video is more than you need.
16GB built in, works as a USB drive: Internal memory holds roughly five hours of footage and doubles as an ordinary flash drive, so files stay local and there is nothing to sync anywhere.
One touch recording: A single press starts it, which keeps your attention on the room instead of the controls.
A working pen with a lens cover: It looks and writes like a standard pen, and the cover protects the optics between uses.
Plug and play, any platform: No drivers to install. It identifies the operating system itself and charges from the same USB port it transfers over.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Interviews and meetings

A pen on the table recording Full HD video with audio of a conversation you are part of. The 65 degree lens frames the people across from you, and one press is all the operation there is, so nothing about using it changes how the meeting goes.

A backup for your notes

Writing everything down means missing half of what is said. Recording lets you listen at the time and go back afterwards. 16GB holds around five hours of footage, so a week of sessions fits before you offload anything.

Low profile documentation on the move

Site visits, callouts and field work where a phone held up changes the situation. It is a pen, it writes, and it doubles as the USB drive you were carrying anyway, so it earns its place in a pocket several times over.

How it Works

Charge from a USB port: The built in lithium ion cell charges over USB with the supplied charger. There is no card to fit, since the 16GB is internal.
Press once to record: One touch starts Full HD video with audio. Choose continuous or manual mode, or switch to picture mode for a still.
Plug it into a computer: Over USB 2.0 it mounts as a flash drive and identifies the operating system on its own. Copy the files across on Windows, Linux or macOS. On a Mac, VLC will play the files if the built in player does not.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record for?

Up to 80 minutes on one charge. The 16GB of internal memory holds roughly five hours of footage in total, so the battery is the limit on any single session and the storage is the limit on how many sessions you keep before offloading.

Does it take a memory card?

No. The 16GB is built into the pen and there is no card slot. It also works as an ordinary USB flash drive, so any spare capacity is usable for files.

Does it record audio as well as video?

Yes. Audio is captured with the video and saved in the same file, so playback stays synchronised.

Do I need to install anything?

No drivers are required. The pen identifies the operating system itself and mounts as a drive on Windows, Linux or macOS. On a Mac, VLC will play the files if the built in player will not.

Can I write with it?

Yes. It is a functioning pen, with a cover over the lens to protect the optics when it is not recording.

What am I allowed to record in New Zealand?

You can record in a public place, and you can record a conversation you are yourself part of, which covers most of what a pen camera gets used for. The limits are firm. Recording a private conversation you are not part of is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Places where people reasonably expect privacy, such as changing rooms, bathrooms and private homes, are off limits without consent, and intimate visual recording is a serious offence. The Privacy Act 2020 governs how you hold and use the footage afterwards, and workplaces, schools, tenancies and venues can set stricter rules than the law requires. This is general information, not legal advice.
