Description

A hidden camera gives itself away when someone picks it up and turns it round. On the VIM-CLOCKCAM4K6 the lens sits in the silver band above the clock display, and the camera's own switch and reset button are underneath the base, so the top and the back show only what a speaker should have: music buttons, a card slot and ports.

It is a working touch night light, a 5W Bluetooth speaker and an alarm clock, with a 1080p WiFi camera that records sound with the picture onto 32GB built into the camera. There is no memory card to buy and no cloud plan. It runs from a power point, so it records around the clock, and it has no night vision, so the room needs to be lit for a usable picture.

Features

  • 32GB inside the camera: footage saves to memory built into the camera, so there is no card to buy and nothing for anyone to slide out of a slot.
  • Sound with the picture: the microphone records speech within about 1 to 2 metres along with the video. That is a conversation at the unit, not across a large room.
  • Camera switch underneath: the camera's on and off switch and its reset button sit on the base, away from the speaker controls, so the sides people look at show nothing unusual.
  • Six-colour touch light: tap the top to step white light through three brightness levels, or hold it for red, green, blue, orange, pink or light blue and two colour cycle modes.
  • 5W Bluetooth speaker: Bluetooth 4.0 pairs with a phone within 10 metres and plays properly, so the speaker gets used and the object looks used.
  • Alarm clock with snooze: an LED clock that sets, wakes and snoozes like any bedside clock.
  • Motion alerts to 5 metres: your phone gets a notification when the camera sees movement within about 5 metres in good light, so you are not scrolling through hours of footage.
  • Live view on iOS and Android: watch and listen live through the free app from anywhere with a signal, change settings and play back the recordings stored in the camera.
  • Hands-free calls: answer or end a call with the play button, reject one with a long press and redial the last number with a double press.
  • Your own music: play files from a microSD card, a USB flash drive or a 3.5mm AUX lead. The card slot belongs to the speaker, and camera footage is never written to it.
  • Mains power, around the clock: there is no camera battery, so it records continuously while it is plugged in, and it stays within reach of a power point.
  • One honest limit: there is no night vision. With no infrared LEDs it needs ordinary room light for a usable picture, and it will not record a dark room.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Reception Counter or Front Desk

A front desk already has a clock and something playing music, so this adds nothing anyone has to explain. It covers the counter at conversation distance, which is where handovers and disagreements happen. In a business, put a notice at the entrance so people know recording is in use.

A Stockroom or Back Office

A power point and a light is the whole installation. Motion alerts tell you when someone went in, rather than leaving you to work backwards from a shortfall at stocktake.

Your Own Lounge or Home Office

A lamp on a side table or on the corner of a desk is ordinary in a way a camera on a bracket is not. The 5 metre detection range suits one room, not an open-plan floor. If a cleaner or a nanny works in your home, tell them the camera is there.

How it Works

  1. Plug it in: connect the micro-USB cable to the supplied adapter at a power point. There is no camera battery, so the unit stays where the power is.
  2. Connect the app: install the free app on iOS or Android and join the camera to a 2.4GHz WiFi network. It does not connect on 5GHz, so split the bands first if your router puts both under one name.
  3. Watch and review: open the app for the live picture and sound, take the motion alerts as they arrive, and play recordings back from the 32GB inside the camera.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it record sound as well as video?

Yes. Sound is recorded with the picture. The microphone reaches about 1 to 2 metres, so it picks up a conversation at the unit clearly, while speech from the far side of a large room will be faint.

Will it record in a dark room?

No. There are no infrared LEDs on this model, so it needs ordinary room light for a usable picture. In a room lit only by a screen or a streetlight you will see shapes and movement, not a face. If you need to record in the dark, choose a clock camera with no-glow night vision instead.

Do I need to buy a memory card?

Not for the camera. Its 32GB is built in and records straight out of the box. The card slot on the back belongs to the speaker and plays your own music files, and no video is ever written to it.

Does it have to stay plugged in?

Yes. There is no camera battery, so it runs from a power point and records continuously while it is connected. It also means the unit can only go where a power point is.

Can I watch it when I am away?

Yes. Once it is on a 2.4GHz WiFi network, the free app shows the live picture and sound from anywhere you have mobile data or WiFi, and the motion alerts arrive on the same phone. There is no cloud plan and no ongoing fee.

Can I use it in my own home or business?

Yes. Recording a place you own or control, such as your own home, shop or office, is the ordinary use for a camera like this. Because it records sound, think about audio first: under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961 you may record a conversation you are part of, but recording a private conversation between other people that you are not part of is an offence. In a shop or a workplace the Privacy Act 2020 means people should know recording is happening, so put up a notice, and the Employment Relations Act 2000 makes covert monitoring of staff very hard to justify. If a nanny, a cleaner or a carer works in your home, tell them the camera is there. Never put it in a bathroom, a changing area or a bedroom someone else is using: intimate visual recording is an offence under sections 216G to 216J of the Crimes Act 1961.
