Description

The VIM-CALCAM1080 is a working desk calculator, 172 x 165 x 40mm, with a pinhole camera and 8GB of built in memory in the same body. It does the arithmetic as well as the recording, which is why it can sit on a desk on its own merits.

It records Full HD 1080p as AVI with audio from a built in microphone that picks up to about 3m, and takes JPEG stills. The controls are on the calculator itself: press the plus and minus key for a photograph, hold it down to start and stop a video. WiFi lets you view and operate it from a phone or a PC, and files play back on a computer over USB 2.0.

Features

A working calculator: It functions as an ordinary desk calculator, so it earns its place on a desk rather than sitting there as a prop.
Full HD with audio: 1080p video saved as AVI, with sound from a built in microphone that reaches about 3m, and JPEG stills.
One key control: Press the plus and minus key to take a photograph, or hold it down to start and stop a video. There is nothing to learn.
8GB built in: Storage is internal, so there is no card to buy, fit or lose.
WiFi access: View and operate the camera from a phone or a PC over your own network.
Works in low light: The supplier rates it for low lighting conditions, though no infrared is fitted.
Recharges over USB: A rechargeable cell tops up over the supplied USB lead, and playback is over USB 2.0 to a computer.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A home office or a study

A calculator on your own desk is doing a real job. Recording from that position gives you a level view of your own room with nothing extra on the surface.

A reception or a counter you run

On premises you manage it sits by the till or the counter where a calculator belongs and records the area in front of it. Put up a notice so people know recording happens.

A workshop or a stockroom office

In a business you own, it covers the desk where the paperwork is done. Tell your staff that the area is recorded, which is both the lawful position and the effective one.

How it Works

Charge it over USB: Top up the internal rechargeable cell over the supplied USB cable. There is no card to fit, because storage is 8GB of built in memory.
Put it on a desk in your own space: Stand it on a desk or a counter inside premises you own or manage, with the pinhole lens facing the area you want covered.
Record with one key: Press the plus and minus key for a photograph or hold it to start and stop a video, or connect over WiFi and operate it from a phone or a PC. Copy the files off over USB 2.0.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work as a calculator?

Yes. It operates as an ordinary desk calculator, and the recording controls sit on the plus and minus key rather than on a separate switch.

How much can it store?

8GB of built in memory. There is no card slot, so copy the files off over USB 2.0 when it fills.

How do I start a recording?

Press the plus and minus button for a photograph, or hold it down to start and stop a video. You can also connect over WiFi and operate it from a phone or a PC.

How is it powered?

On AA batteries, which the manufacturer has confirmed as the main supply. The 150mAh internal cell is a small backup that keeps it running if the AA cells go flat, not the main power source, which is why the capacity looks low for a device with WiFi.

What can I lawfully record with a camera like this in New Zealand?

You can record a space you own or control for your own security: your own home, a home office, a reception counter or an office in a business you run. The Privacy Act 2020 expects people who are recorded to be told, so put up a notice and tell staff and visitors. Never place it in a bathroom, a changing area or a bedroom that is not yours, because intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video, so leave it off unless you need it, and do not use it to record conversations you are not part of. This is general information rather than legal advice.
