Description

The VIM-ASHWIFI is a 120mm ashtray with a 1080p camera in the housing. It runs on an internal battery for 120 to 480 minutes per charge depending on settings, so it can sit on a table or a balcony ledge of your own with no cable running to it.

It joins your home WiFi and streams live to an Android phone, records video with audio to a microSD card up to 128GB, and detects motion out to about 6m across a 90 degree view. One thing to know before you buy: the app is Android only, so there is no iPhone support.

Features

Battery powered: 120 to 480 minutes per charge from the internal lithium ion cell, so no cable is needed where you place it.
1080p with audio: 1920 x 1080 recording with sound, plus a still photo mode.
WiFi live view: joins your home router and streams live to an Android phone. There is no iOS app.
Motion detection to about 6m: starts recording on movement and pushes a notification to your phone.
90 degree view: wide enough to cover a table or a small outdoor area from one position.
128GB local storage: microSD up to 128GB, so footage stays with the unit.
Plug and play: no installation, no mounting and nothing to wire in. 100g and 120mm across.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Your Own Balcony Or Deck

An outdoor table at a property you own, where there is no socket and no camera bracket. The battery and the flat 120mm body mean it sits on the table like the rest of the furniture and needs nothing done to the building.

A Table Or Desk Indoors

Rooms of your own where a cable would have to cross the floor. 120 to 480 minutes covers a session rather than a permanent installation, so charge it before the period you want covered.

Somewhere That Moves

Nothing is mounted, so it goes wherever the view is that day. Charge it, put it down, pick it up again.

How it Works

Charge and load: charge the internal battery and fit a microSD card up to 128GB.
Connect: install the Android app and join the camera to your home WiFi router. iPhone is not supported.
Place and record: set it on a table facing the area you want covered, and choose motion recording or continuous. Watch live in the app or read the card afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I use this and stay within the law?

You can record a space you own or control. Your own house, your own office or shop, a stockroom, a garage or a holiday house are all ordinary lawful uses and they are what this is sold for. The limits are worth setting up correctly from the start. The Privacy Act 2020 expects people to be told when a space is being recorded, so a notice at the entrance is the usual answer for any area that staff, visitors or contractors use. Bathrooms, changing areas and bedrooms are off limits, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video: recording a private conversation you are not part of is a criminal offence. If the space is not yours to control, this is not the right device for it. This is general information, not legal advice.

Does it work with an iPhone?

No. The app is Android only, which is the main limitation of this model. If you use an iPhone, pick a camera with an iOS app instead.

How long does the battery last?

Between 120 and 480 minutes per charge, depending on whether it is streaming, recording continuously or waiting on motion. It is a session length device rather than a permanent installation.

How far does motion detection reach?

About 6m across a 90 degree view. Place it within that of the area you want triggering alerts.

What storage does it take?

A microSD card up to 128GB, not supplied. Footage is written locally rather than to a cloud service.

Does it record sound?

Yes. Audio is regulated more strictly than video in New Zealand, so keep it to a space you control and tell anyone using that space that it is recorded.
