Description

The VIM-DOCKCAM7 is a 10W wireless charging stand with a camera behind the front cover. It runs on mains power over USB-C, so it records continuously with no battery to manage, sitting where a phone stand belongs on a desk or a bedside table in your own home or office.

Live view streams at 4K to the Android or iOS app over 2.4GHz WiFi, and recordings are saved at 1080p with audio to a microSD card with loop recording. The lens covers 90 degrees and the weighted stand is shaped so a phone on the pad does not tip it.

Features

Runs continuously on mains power: USB-C keeps it powered around the clock, so there is no battery to charge or swap.
4K live, 1080p recorded: the live stream is Ultra HD; files written to the card are 1080p Full HD in H.264.
10W wireless charging: it works as a charging stand for Android phones and iPhones, with three magnetic charging plugs supplied.
WiFi live view: joins a 2.4GHz network and streams to the free Android or iOS app, with access from more than one device.
Motion detection with alerts: movement inside the 90 degree view triggers recording and a pop-up notification.
Audio recorded: a built-in microphone captures sound alongside the picture.
Loop recording: the oldest files are overwritten once the card is full, so it keeps running unattended.
Stable stand: the base is weighted against tipping or rocking when a phone is placed on it.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Desk In Your Own Home Or Office

Somewhere a charging stand is already the natural object. Mains power means it never stops, and the app tells you what moved rather than leaving you to review a whole day.

Front Counter Or Reception You Run

Premises you manage, with notice at the entrance so staff and visitors know the area is recorded. The 90 degree view covers a counter from stand height and the charging pad earns its space.

Checking In From Elsewhere

Live view over your own WiFi from anywhere with internet, on more than one phone if you want another person able to look. This is the reason to pick a connected unit over a card-only recorder.

How it Works

Plug it in: set the stand where you want the room covered and connect the USB-C power lead. It needs a permanent supply for continuous recording.
Connect: install the free Android or iOS app and join the camera to your 2.4GHz WiFi network. 5GHz is not supported.
Record and review: choose continuous or motion recording, then watch live, play back or download clips in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I put this and stay within the law?

You can record a space you own or control. Your own house, your own office or shop, a stockroom, a garage or a holiday house are all ordinary lawful uses and they are what this is sold for. The limits are worth setting up correctly from the start. The Privacy Act 2020 expects people to be told when a space is being recorded, so a notice at the entrance is the usual answer for any area that staff, visitors or contractors use. Bathrooms, changing areas and bedrooms are off limits, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video: recording a private conversation you are not part of is a criminal offence. If the space is not yours to control, this is not the right device for it. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I view it while I am away?

Yes. Join it to a 2.4GHz WiFi network and use the Android or iOS app for live view and playback from anywhere with internet. More than one device can be given access.

What does it actually record at?

Recordings are saved at 1080p. The 4K figure is the live streaming mode, which is a different thing from what is written to the card.

How does motion detection work?

It watches for movement inside the 90 degree field of view. When it sees some, it can start recording and send a pop-up notification to your phone.

Will it work on 5GHz WiFi?

No. This unit is 2.4GHz only. If your router runs a combined network you may need to split the bands to get it to join.

What storage does it take?

A microSD card, with loop recording so the oldest footage is overwritten rather than the recording stopping. Clips can be reviewed and downloaded in the app.
