Description

A complaint about how a guard handled a theft stop usually turns on the first few seconds, the part a camera misses while someone hunts for the power key. One press on the record key starts the VIM-PC-03 recording even when it is switched off, and left on standby it keeps a rolling buffer, so the clip opens before the press. Red and blue strobes with a siren make the wearer easy to see on a dark site, and with menu lock on, settings and playback need a password.

It records 4K at 30fps, or 1080p at 60fps for fast movement, to a microSD card of up to 512GB, which is not included, so add one to the order. The built-in 3,000mAh battery is rated for about 13 hours at 1080p with the screen off and charges over USB-C. There is no WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G or app: clips are checked on the 2.4 inch screen and copied off over the cable. Each camera comes with its own magnetic chest mount and a long clip, and it is rated IP68 and for a 2 metre drop.

Features

  • One press records from off: A single press on the record key wakes the camera and starts recording, so there is no start-up sequence to remember when something happens.
  • Pre-record on standby: Left switched on, the camera keeps a rolling buffer, so each clip begins before the record key is pressed. A camera started from off has no buffer.
  • Post-record, 5 seconds to 5 minutes: After stop is pressed, it keeps recording for the time you set, so an early press does not cut off how an incident ended.
  • Red and blue strobes with a siren: The SOS key flashes the red and blue lamps beside the lens, with or without a siren from the top speaker. It is a local alarm only: nothing is sent to anyone.
  • Menu lock: With the password on, changing settings or replaying clips needs the password, and files can only be deleted from a computer. The card is not encrypted, so collect cameras and cards at the end of each shift.
  • 4K at 30fps, or 1080p at 60fps: Record 3840 x 2160 for detail to zoom into later, 1080p at 60 frames a second when people move fast, or 1440p and 1296p in between to fit more hours on a card.
  • 2.4 inch playback screen: Replay a clip on the camera for a supervisor before handover. There is no phone app, so the screen is where footage gets checked on site.
  • No WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G or app: Nothing to pair, update or connect to a network, and no data plan. Footage stays on the card until it is copied off over the USB-C cable.
  • Magnetic chest mount in the box: Each camera arrives with its own magnetic chest mount and a long clip, so a team can be issued cameras without ordering mounts as an extra.
  • About 13 hours at 1080p: From the 3,000mAh built-in battery with the screen off. Recording in 4K, infrared and a lit screen all shorten it, so test a full shift on your own settings.
  • Infrared night vision, auto, manual or off: Six infrared LEDs come on through a light sensor as the light fades, or switch them yourself from the record key.
  • White LED torch: The audio key doubles as a white light for checking an ID card, a number plate or a doorway at close range.
  • Motion recording: Set down facing a gate or a door, the camera records when the scene changes and stops once it goes still. Switch sound off when it is left unattended.
  • Loop recording, 2 to 30 minute files: With loop on, the oldest files make way when the card fills. With loop off, recording stops at a full card and nothing is overwritten.
  • Record silently: Indicator lights and key tones switch off for foyers, lobbies and other quiet areas, while the camera stays in plain view on the chest.
  • Key-file marker: Press the up key during recording to flag the file, so the clip is easy to find when the incident report is written.
  • Sound with video, or sound only: Audio switches on or off for video, a separate key records sound on its own, and voice prompts can be turned on or off.
  • Photos while recording: The photo key takes a still without stopping the video, with burst, delayed and timed photos in the menu.
  • Distortion correction: Straightens the curved edges of the wide lens, so a counter or a doorframe looks straight on playback.
  • Car mode: Powered from a vehicle, the camera starts recording when the engine starts and shuts down after it stops. A vehicle USB charger and holder are not included, and keep the strobes off in a vehicle.
  • IP68 and a 2 metre drop rating: Sealed against dust and water with the side cover closed, and rated for a fall from above shoulder height.
  • microSD card up to 512GB: The card sits under the side cover next to the USB-C port. No card is supplied, so add one to the order.
  • 120 g and pocket sized: Light on the chest through a long patrol, and small enough for a shirt pocket with the mount off.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Retail loss prevention at the exit

A theft stop at the door can turn in seconds. Kept on standby, the camera has pre-record running, so the clip opens before the officer reached for the key, and the 2.4 inch screen lets the store manager watch it before the footage is handed to Police.

Parking and council compliance officers

An argument over an infringement notice often carries on after the officer has walked away. Post-record keeps filming for up to 5 minutes after stop, and about 13 hours at 1080p with the screen off covers a long day on foot.

Foyer and concierge security

Office foyers and apartment lobbies are quiet, and a beeping camera draws looks. Record silently turns off the lights and tones while the camera stays visible on the chest, and menu lock stops the night shift changing the day shift's settings.

How it Works

  1. Set up once: Charge over the USB-C cable and fit a microSD card, then set the resolution, loop length, pre-record, post-record and password in the menu.
  2. Wear and record: Fit the magnetic chest mount or the long clip. Press record once, even with the camera switched off.
  3. Review and hand over: Replay clips on the 2.4 inch screen, then connect the cable to a computer to copy the files off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need WiFi, an app or a SIM card?

No. Footage goes straight onto the microSD card, and the camera has no WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G or app to set up, so there is no data plan either. The trade-off is reach: nobody can watch it live, so footage is checked on the screen or copied off over USB-C.

How long does the battery last on a shift?

About 13 hours of continuous 1080p recording per charge from the 3,000mAh battery, measured with the screen dark. Recording in 4K, using infrared or leaving the screen on all shorten that. The battery is built in, so it charges between shifts over USB-C rather than being swapped.

Does it come with a memory card?

No. The slot under the side cover takes a microSD card up to 512GB and none is in the box, so add a 128GB or 256GB card to the same order. Without a card the camera cannot record.

Can a guard delete a clip on the camera?

Not from its own keys with menu lock on. Settings and playback need the password, and files can only be deleted from a computer. The card is not encrypted, though, so anyone who connects the camera to a computer can copy or delete files: collect cameras and cards after each shift.

Does it come with a charging dock?

No. It charges over the USB-C cable in the box, in about 3 hours from a 2A charger. The supplied wall charger is 1A, so allow longer with that one.

Does a body camera record all the time?

No. This one records from the moment you press record until you stop it, in files of 2 to 30 minutes. Pre-record adds the moments before the press, post-record keeps going for up to 5 minutes after stop, and motion recording starts on movement when the camera is set down.

What do I need to know about wearing one on duty in New Zealand?

Body worn cameras are used here by agencies such as Corrections and court and fisheries officers, and by security staff, and filming openly in a public place or on premises you guard is lawful. Audio is the part to handle with care: under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961 you may record a conversation you are part of, but not one you are only overhearing, so wear the camera openly and say that it records. An organisation deploying it needs a policy under the Privacy Act 2020 covering notice, retention, access and disclosure, staff who wear it or are filmed by it should be consulted under the good faith duty in the Employment Relations Act 2000, and paid security work needs a certificate of approval under the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010. The strobes and siren draw attention but give no authority, and passing yourself off as Police is an offence under the Policing Act 2008. This is general information, not legal advice.
