The VIM-CARKEY4K2 is the key fob with the real sensor: a Sony IMX179 with wide dynamic range, recording 4K at 30fps, 2K at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps depending on what you need out of it.

Built-in WiFi gives live view and file management from an Android or iOS app. The 900mAh cell runs 50 to 90 minutes depending on the mode, and plugged into USB power it runs continuously. Storage is a microSD card up to 128GB with loop recording and an optional date and time stamp.

Does it record in 4K or only stream it?

Its specification lists 4K at 30fps as a recording mode alongside 2K and 1080p at 60fps, so the card gets 4K if you choose it. Note that the older marketing copy for this product said 4K was live view only, which does not match the specification sheet. Ask us if that matters to your purchase.

How long does it record?

50 to 90 minutes on the 900mAh cell, depending on which resolution you pick. 4K uses more of the battery than 1080p does.

Can I watch it live on my phone?

Yes. It has built-in WiFi and an app for Android and iOS, with live view, settings and file downloads.

When should I use 1080p at 60fps?

When the movement matters more than the detail. 60fps gives smoother playback of something moving quickly; 4K at 30fps gives more detail in a still frame.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Carried and used while you are present, yes. You are a party to what happens in front of you, and recording a conversation you are part of is lawful here, as is filming in a place you own or control. What you cannot do is leave it recording a conversation you are not part of, use it in a bathroom or changing area, or record intimate footage, which is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. In a vehicle, tell your passengers before they get in.
