Description

The VIM-WATCH2KLUX is a heavy duty wristwatch recorder with 64GB of memory built in, which is by far the most storage of any watch here and means there is no card to fit or lose.

Its own specification gives 2048 x 1152 at 30fps for video and 3840 x 2160 for stills, so the 4K in the title refers to the photographs rather than the footage. The lens covers 60 degrees horizontally with a focal range of 1 to 3 metres, and the 320mAh cell records for up to 80 minutes. It also tells the time.

Features

64GB built in: The largest onboard storage of any watch camera in the range, with no card to buy or fit.
2K video and 4K stills: 2048 x 1152 at 30fps in MP4, and 3840 x 2160 photographs.
Built for wear: A heavy duty case and a secure strap, intended for outdoor and active use rather than a desk.
Date and time stamp: Embedded in the recording, which is what makes a clip usable as a record.
One button: Video or stills from a single control, which is the only sensible interface on a watch.
A working watch: It keeps time with a clear display, which is why it belongs on a wrist.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Recording Your Own Activity

Hiking, cycling or working outdoors, from a first person view, on a wrist that is already going with you.

Recording Your Own Work

An inspection or a job where a record of what you did and what you found matters, made by you while you are there.

An Incident You Are Part Of

A recording made by someone present is evidence, and a watch is with you when it happens.

Documenting a Property You Own

Walk a site you own or manage and record its condition hands free, at 2K, with the date on the file.

How it Works

Charge it: charge over micro USB. There is no card to fit, because the 64GB is built in.
Start recording: press the single button to record 2K video, or switch to stills for 4K photographs.
Retrieve the files: connect to a Windows or Mac computer over USB and copy the MP4 files across.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it record in 4K?

No. Its specification gives video as 2048 x 1152 at 30fps, which is 2K, and 3840 x 2160 for stills. The 4K figure in the product title is the photo resolution. We have used the specification figures throughout rather than repeating the title.

How much can it store?

64GB, built in, which at 2K is a long stretch of footage and considerably more than the 80 minute battery will fill in one session. There is no card slot.

What is the focal range for?

The lens is set for 1 to 3 metres, so it is sharpest at conversational distance rather than across a room or at a horizon.

How long does it record?

Up to 80 minutes on the 320mAh cell, then recharge over micro USB.

Does it record sound?

Yes. It offers video plus audio recording through a built-in microphone, so footage plays back with sound. Audio carries stricter rules in New Zealand than video: recording a private conversation you are not a party to is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961, so only record conversations you are part of.

Can I record with this legally in New Zealand?

Worn and used while you are present, yes. You are a party to what happens in front of you, and recording a conversation you are part of is lawful here, as is filming in a place you own or control. What you cannot do is leave it recording a conversation you are not part of, take it into a bathroom, changing area or anywhere else with a reasonable expectation of privacy, or record intimate footage, which is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961.
