The VIM-DCCAM is a 1080p camera in a mains plug adapter with an NZ 2 pin plug. What sets it apart is what it does not have: no WiFi, no Bluetooth, no cellular and no app. It records to a microSD card in the unit and nothing leaves the room.

That makes it the one to choose where there is no network at all, or where you do not want a camera depending on your broadband staying up. It runs from the socket with no battery, records 1920 x 1080 at 30fps in motion or loop mode, and has eight infrared LEDs that switch on by themselves in low light. It offers video plus audio recording through a built-in microphone.

Where am I allowed to plug this in?

You can record a space you own or control: your own house, your own business premises, a storeroom, a garage or a holiday house. That is what this is sold for. The limits matter. Under the Privacy Act 2020 people need to be told when a space is being recorded, so put a notice at the entrance of any area staff, visitors or contractors use, and if the property is tenanted the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 applies as well. Bathrooms, bedrooms and changing areas are off limits, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. This device also records sound, so the interception rules in Part 9A of the Crimes Act 1961 apply as well: using it to record a private conversation you are not a party to is an offence. Does it work without WiFi?

Yes, and that is the whole point of it. There are no WiFi, Bluetooth or cellular components at all. Recording happens entirely on the local microSD card with no app, no router and no internet connection at any stage.

How long does it record?

Indefinitely while it is plugged in, because it draws power from the socket rather than a battery. Loop mode overwrites the oldest footage when the card is full; motion mode records only when movement is detected.

Can the USB port charge my phone?

No. The USB port is not functional. This is a camera in an adapter shell, not a working charger, and all the electrical draw runs the camera and the infrared LEDs.

Does it record sound?

Yes. It offers video plus audio recording through a built-in microphone, so footage on the card plays back with sound. Audio carries stricter rules in New Zealand than video: recording a private conversation you are not a party to is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961, so choose where it sits with that in mind.

How do I get the footage off?

Unplug it, remove the front cover, eject the microSD card and read it on any computer with the supplied USB card reader.
