Description

The MAS-52HD is a compact recorder, 88 x 43 x 19mm, with a 160 degree lens. That lens is the widest in this range and it is the reason to pick this one: from one position it takes in a doorway, a desk and a counter at the same time.

It records 1280 x 720 with audio and offers five recording modes, including motion, vibration and voice triggering. A 1200mAh battery gives up to 10 hours of continuous recording, up to 90 days in vibration triggered power saving mode, or up to four months of standby. Storage is microSD up to 128GB.

Features

  • 160 degree lens: the widest view in this range, covering a doorway, a desk and a counter from a single position.
  • Five recording modes: continuous, motion activated, scheduled, vibration activated and voice activated.
  • Up to 10 hours continuous: from a 1200mAh 3.7V lithium ion cell, or up to 90 days in vibration triggered power saving mode.
  • Up to 4 months standby: in motion, voice or vibration mode, waiting rather than recording.
  • Video with audio: recorded together, with a time and date stamp on every file.
  • Night recording: infrared for low light, so it keeps working after the lights go off.
  • 128GB storage: microSD up to 128GB, at about 15 minutes per GB at high frame rate or an hour per GB at low.
  • Loop recording: supported, so the oldest files are overwritten rather than recording stopping.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Corner That Has To Cover Everything

160 degrees is what you buy this for. In a small room of your own where one camera has to see the door and the desk at once, a 66 or 90 degree lens will miss one of them.

A Storeroom You Check Occasionally

Premises you run, with notice up where others use the space. Vibration triggered power saving stretches the battery to as much as 90 days, so a storeroom you visit monthly stays covered between visits.

Somewhere Movement Is Rare

Voice and vibration triggers catch events a motion sensor might miss, such as a door being forced or a drawer opened out of frame. Up to four months of standby means it is still waiting when it happens.

How it Works

  1. Charge and load: charge the 1200mAh battery over Mini USB and fit a microSD card up to 128GB.
  2. Pick a trigger: continuous, scheduled, or triggered by motion, vibration or voice. The trigger you choose decides whether the battery lasts hours, weeks or months.
  3. Retrieve: connect it to a Windows or macOS computer over Mini USB and copy the files off the card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I use this and stay within the law?

You can record a space you own or control. Your own house, your own office or shop, a stockroom, a garage or a holiday house are all ordinary lawful uses and they are what this is sold for. The limits are worth setting up correctly from the start. The Privacy Act 2020 expects people to be told when a space is being recorded, so a notice at the entrance is the usual answer for any area that staff, visitors or contractors use. Bathrooms, changing areas and bedrooms are off limits, and intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video: recording a private conversation you are not part of is a criminal offence. If the space is not yours to control, this is not the right device for it. This is general information, not legal advice.

How wide is the view really?

160 degrees, which is close to the whole wall in front of it. That is the main reason to choose this model over a 66 or 90 degree camera, and it is worth checking whether your placement actually needs it.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 10 hours recording continuously. In vibration triggered power saving mode that stretches to as much as 90 days, and standby in motion, voice or vibration mode can reach four months. The mode you choose is what decides it.

What resolution does it record?

1280 x 720 video. The supplied specification also lists a 1280 x 960 sensor resolution, so the two figures differ; the recorded video is 720p.

What can trigger it?

Motion, vibration or voice, as well as continuous and scheduled recording. Vibration is useful where movement happens out of the lens view, such as a door or a drawer.

Does it record sound?

Yes, together with video, and it can be triggered by sound. Audio is regulated more strictly than video in New Zealand, so keep it to spaces you control and to conversations you are part of.
