Description

Tools go out of the shed overnight and there is nothing to show the Police in the morning. A recorder in the house and four cameras on the outside walls changes that, and once it is up there is nothing to pay each month.

Four Sony Starvis 5MP cameras run back to a four channel recorder on one Ethernet cable each, carrying power and picture down the same run. Infrared reaches 25 metres, the IP66 housings are built for rain and dust, and H.265+ compression fits weeks of continuous recording onto a hard drive of up to 8TB. Each camera also takes a microSD card of up to 512GB as a second copy. Watch live or scroll back through it from your phone or a Windows PC.

Four 5MP cameras: 1/2.8 inch Sony Starvis CMOS sensors with a 3.6mm fixed lens and 0.01 Lux minimum illumination.
One cable per camera: Power over Ethernet sends the power and the video down a single run, with two 30 metre and two 20 metre cables supplied.
Weeks of recording on your own drive: H.265+ compression onto a hard drive of up to 8TB (not included), with no cloud subscription attached to it.
A second copy at the camera: Each camera takes a microSD card of up to 512GB (not included), so footage survives even if something happens to the recorder.

Real-World Scenarios

Home and family, day and night

You are asleep, or at work, and someone comes up the drive. Four cameras cover the front door, the drive, the back of the house and the garage, and 25 metres of infrared means the footage is still usable at two in the morning. A motion alert lands on your phone and you can look at the live view before you decide to do anything about it.

Yards, sites and stored gear

A yard with plant or materials in it is empty most of the night. The cameras are IP66 rated so weather is not the problem it would be for an indoor unit, and continuous recording onto an 8TB drive holds a long run of overnight footage. You can pull up any of it from the app without going out there.

A shop or workshop after closing

The doors shut at five and nothing is watched again until morning. The recorder keeps writing to its own drive whether or not the internet is behaving, so an outage does not lose you the night. In the morning you scroll straight to the minute you care about.

How it Works

Mount the four cameras and run one Ethernet cable from each back to the recorder. That single cable carries both the power and the video, and the kit includes two 30 metre and two 20 metre runs.
Fit a SATA hard drive of up to 8TB (not included) and connect the recorder to your router with the LAN cable supplied. It starts writing straight away.
Add the recorder to the free phone app, or open it in a browser on a Windows PC, for live view, playback and motion notifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need WiFi?

No. The cameras are wired to the recorder over Ethernet, so the video never touches your WiFi. The recorder plugs into your router with a LAN cable, and that connection is only there so you can watch from your phone when you are away.

Is a hard drive included?

No. It takes a SATA hard drive of up to 8TB. We can fit one before dispatch at extra cost: contact us before you order for a quote. Without one you can watch live but nothing is saved.

How long does footage stay on the drive?

It depends on the drive you fit and whether you record all the time or only on motion. An 8TB drive holds weeks of continuous recording from four cameras, and switching to motion only recording stretches that a long way further. Once the drive is full the recorder overwrites the oldest footage first.

Can I watch on an iPhone and an Android at the same time?

Yes. The app is free on both, more than one person can be logged in at once, and you can also open the recorder in a browser on a Windows PC.

Are the cameras all right outside in a New Zealand winter?

They are IP66 rated, which covers rain and dust, so they are made to be mounted outside. The recorder itself is an indoor unit and needs to sit somewhere dry.

What am I allowed to record?

Cameras covering your own property, your entrances and your driveway are ordinary and lawful in New Zealand, and that is what almost everyone buys a kit like this for. Two limits are worth knowing. Point the cameras at your own land rather than through a neighbour's windows or across a shared space, and do not put one anywhere a person reasonably expects privacy, such as a bathroom, a bedroom or a changing area. Keep footage only as long as you actually need it, and hand it to the Police rather than putting it online. A business recording people must also follow the Privacy Act 2020. A sign at the gate saying cameras are in use is good practice. This is general information, not legal advice.
