Four cameras pair to the recorder over their own wireless link with a QR code, in about thirty seconds each, from up to 30.5 metres away. Two watch for body heat and two watch for vehicles, so a car turning into the drive at two in the morning is treated differently from a possum crossing the lawn. The recorder has a 12 inch screen built into it, so you can watch all four at once without tying up a television, and it writes continuously to a hard drive of up to 8TB. Infrared covers 25 metres and there is nothing to pay each month.

Each camera only has to be within about 30.5 metres of the recorder, so the buildings near the house are straightforward, and an 8TB drive holds a long run of nights if a piece of gear goes missing and you need to work back through it.

The drive and the gate

Two of the cameras are set up to pick out vehicles, which is the difference between an alert every time a possum crosses the lawn and an alert when a ute turns in. Full HD at close range gets you a number plate at the gate, and infrared keeps working to 25 metres once it is dark.

Home, deliveries and the kids

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work without the internet?

Yes. The cameras talk to the recorder directly and it writes to its own hard drive, so recording carries on if your connection drops. Internet at the recorder is only needed for watching from your phone and for alerts.

Is a hard drive included?

No. It takes a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive of up to 8TB. We can fit one before dispatch at extra cost: contact us before you order for a quote. Without one the 12 inch screen still shows live video but nothing is saved.

How far can a camera be from the recorder?

Up to about 30.5 metres. Walls, steel cladding and distance all cut into that, so test a position before you mount anything permanently.

What is the difference between the thermal and the vehicle cameras?

Two cameras use a PIR sensor that triggers on body heat, which is what you want on a path or a doorway. The other two are set up to pick out vehicles, which suits a driveway or a gate where you do not want an alert every time an animal walks past.

Can I add more cameras later?

The recorder has four channels, so four is the limit on this unit. It is ONVIF compliant, so a compatible third party camera can take the place of one of the originals.

What am I allowed to record?

Cameras covering your own property, your entrances and your driveway are ordinary and lawful in New Zealand, and that is what almost everyone buys a kit like this for. Two limits are worth knowing. Point the cameras at your own land rather than through a neighbour's windows or across a shared space, and do not put one anywhere a person reasonably expects privacy, such as a bathroom, a bedroom or a changing area. Keep footage only as long as you actually need it, and hand it to the Police rather than putting it online. A business recording people must also follow the Privacy Act 2020. A sign at the gate saying cameras are in use is good practice. This is general information, not legal advice. These cameras also carry sound, and audio has its own rule. You can record a conversation you are taking part in, such as speaking to someone at the door through the camera. Recording a private conversation between other people that you are not part of is interception under section 216B of the Crimes Act 1961, so if a camera covers a spot where people stop and talk, it is worth switching the audio off on that channel.
