Description

The VIM-BUTCAM1080 is a button sized pinhole camera on a 2 metre lead, and unlike most of its kind it comes with the power source in the box: a 10,000mAh power bank that the supplier rates at up to 100 hours of continuous recording.

It records 1280 x 960 at 30fps as AVI with audio and a time stamp, through a 50 degree lens with a 5.5mm focal length. Continuous recording and motion triggered recording are both supported. Storage runs at about 3GB per hour, so cards up to 128GB hold roughly forty hours before they need clearing. Cards of 64GB and above must be formatted FAT32.

Features

Power bank included: A 10,000mAh pack is in the box, not sold separately, which is what the up to 100 hour figure is based on.
Up to 100 hours of continuous recording: The longest continuous run of any camera in this range, because the supply is external rather than a cell inside the housing.
Two metre lead: The camera head sits well away from the recorder and the power bank, so the lens can be where you need it while the rest is in a bag or a drawer.
1280 x 960 at 30fps with audio: Saved as AVI with sound and a time stamp on every frame.
Continuous or motion triggered: Record everything, or let motion detection keep the card free of empty footage.
50 degree lens: A 5.5mm focal length gives a narrow, focused view of a specific area rather than a whole room.
128GB card support: About 3GB per hour of recording, so a 128GB card holds roughly forty hours. Cards of 64GB and above must be formatted FAT32.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A workshop or a plant room you own

A 50 degree lens on a 2 metre lead covers one machine or one door closely, with the power bank sitting out of the way. Tell your staff the area is recorded.

A stall or a counter you are running

A hundred hours of recording covers several trading days without touching it, which suits a market stall or a temporary counter you are staffing yourself.

A store or a container with no power

The pack is the supply, so it works where there is no outlet and no network at all.

How it Works

Fit and format a card: Slide in a microSD card up to 128GB. At 64GB and above it must be formatted FAT32.
Connect the power bank: Plug the 2 metre lead into the supplied 10,000mAh pack. There is no internal cell, so the pack is the runtime.
Choose a mode: Record continuously for up to about 100 hours, or switch to motion triggered recording to save card space. Copy the AVI files off on a computer when you are done.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can it record continuously?

Up to about 100 hours from the supplied 10,000mAh power bank. Storage is usually the shorter limit: at about 3GB per hour, a 128GB card holds roughly forty hours.

Does it support motion triggered recording?

Yes. The supplier lists motion detection as a mode, which conserves the card when nothing is happening. Continuous recording is the other option.

What storage cards are compatible?

microSD up to 128GB, not included. Cards of 64GB and above have to be formatted FAT32 before use.

How much of a scene does it cover?

50 degrees, which is narrow. This is a camera for one door, one machine or one counter rather than a whole room.

What can I lawfully record with a camera like this in New Zealand?

If you are wearing it, you can record a conversation you are taking part in, and you can record a space you own or control such as your own workshop, store or stall. What you cannot do is record a private conversation you are not part of, or record inside someone else's space. The Privacy Act 2020 expects people who are recorded to be told, so put up a notice where it can be seen. Never place it where it can see into a bathroom, a changing area or a bedroom that is not yours, because intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. This is general information rather than legal advice.
