Description

The MAS-23HD is an 88 x 43 x 19mm recorder built around triggers. Motion, PIR human detection, vibration and voice can each start a recording, which is why a 2400mAh cell stretches to a maximum of 90 days on standby in vibration triggered power saving mode.

It records 720p at 1280 x 720, or 360p, from a sensor rated 1280 x 960, across a 160 degree lens. Night vision is 940nm at 0 lux, so it records in complete darkness without adding any visible light to the room. Every file carries a date and time stamp, recording can be muted, and a seven day circular schedule covers the same hours each week. Files are AVI on a microSD card up to 64GB, at roughly an hour per gigabyte at the low frame rate.

Features

  • Four ways to trigger: Motion, PIR human detection, vibration and voice can each start a recording, so it can be set up for whichever signal actually matters in the space.
  • Up to 90 days on standby: In vibration triggered power saving mode the supplier rates a full charge at a maximum of 90 days.
  • Night recording at 0 lux: 940nm infrared records in complete darkness without adding any visible light to the room.
  • 160 degree lens: One of the widest views in this range, so a single position covers a large room with few blind spots.
  • Seven day circular schedule: Set the hours that matter and it records those windows each week, without touching it in between.
  • Optional mute: Audio can be switched off, which matters because audio carries stricter rules than video in New Zealand.
  • 64 hours on a 64GB card: At the low frame rate the supplier quotes about an hour per gigabyte, with non overlapping files.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A garage or a storeroom you own

PIR and vibration triggering catch a door or a cabinet being opened even before anything crosses the lens, and 940nm infrared covers the hours the lights are off.

A shop or an office you run

The seven day schedule covers the same hours each week without anyone touching it. Put up a notice and tell your staff that the space is recorded.

A vehicle you own

The supplier lists driving records among its uses. It covers the cabin of your own vehicle, and vibration triggering picks up an impact. Tell anyone who rides with you that recording happens before they get in.

How it Works

  1. Charge it and fit a card: Charge the 2400mAh cell from the supplied 5V 600mA adapter and fit a microSD card up to 64GB.
  2. Place it in your own space: Put it in premises or a vehicle you own or manage, with the 160 degree lens covering the area you want and the sensors pointing along it.
  3. Choose the trigger: Arm motion, PIR, vibration or voice triggering, or set the seven day schedule. Vibration triggered power saving is the setting that gives the longest standby.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record continuously?

Up to 10 hours on a full charge, which the manufacturer has confirmed, so ignore the 24 hour figure that appears on some older feature lists. On triggers rather than continuous recording, standby stretches to up to 90 days.

Which storage cards are supported?

microSD up to 64GB. At the low frame rate that holds around 64 hours, and at the high frame rate closer to 16.

Does the infrared glow?

No. It works at 940nm, which is outside what the eye can see, so it records a dark room at 0 lux without adding any visible light to it.

Can I turn the audio off?

Yes. Recording can be muted. Audio carries stricter rules than video in New Zealand, so mute it unless you actually need sound.

What can I lawfully record with a camera like this in New Zealand?

You can record a space you own or control for your own security: your own home, a garage, a storeroom, a shop or office you run, or the inside of your own vehicle. The Privacy Act 2020 expects people who are recorded to be told, so put up a notice on premises and tell anyone who rides in your vehicle before they get in. Never place it where it can see into a bathroom, a changing area or a bedroom that is not yours, because intimate visual recording is an offence under the Crimes Act 1961. Audio is treated more strictly than video and voice triggering means the microphone is always listening, so use the mute option unless you genuinely need sound. This is general information rather than legal advice.
